I have a album by REO Speedwagon from 1984 called Wheels Are Turning and I want to know on the back of the lp cover there is a steam locomotive that the band is posing next to the driving wheels can you tell me what steam locomotive is.

A 4-4-2? With Stephenson valve gear? Are any of those SP engines still around?
Timz, I know nothing about SP steam really, but if you are talking about an SP A-3 4-4-2 there is one preserved at Travel Town Museum in Los Angeles.
Yeah, SP 3025 looks a good bet. Dunscomb has a pic of it, polished up and ready to donate in 1952.
As a notable point: see the Delta truck prominently displayed almost in the foreground of the image? There is or was a booster in that truck.
This was more useful in some circumstances than you might think. There's a story in one of the books about railroading in the Forties that describes a fairly long troop train being pulled by 'an elderly 4-4-2' which did the business surprisingly well -- this was the 'secret' reason such a thing was likely possible.
Now, what's the provenance of the 0-6-0 on the Gerry Mulligan 'Age of Steam' album from 1971?
