Steamlocomotive.com says she's a 36" gauge 0-4-0 saddletank engine, built by Vulcan in 1910.  The smokebox is poking out from under the fat saddle tank.  the stack appears to be missing.

Dollars for Dinky

A fund raising effort by the City of Beckley's Parks and Recreation Department is underway to raise money to help restore the iconic Dinky Train that currently sits in New River Park.

Beckley's little Dinky Train has true historical value. During the late 19th century and the early 20th century, smaller gauge track and trains were used to move people and freight short distances. The Dinky in New River Park was used to haul coal for the Crab Orchard Coal Company. More than forty years ago, when the mine closed, the locomotive was donated to the City and placed in the newly developed New River Park. Come to find out, most of these types of trains were scrapped and there just aren’t many of them around anymore.

Almost everyone in Beckley can remember playing on the Dinky Train or picnicking close by. It truly has become a beloved city landmark. Over the years, the ravages of time have taken their toll and now we would like to move the Dinky down closer to the Exhibition Coal Mine and Youth Museum and have it returned to its former glory but funds are needed for the restoration.

The Parks and Recreation Department is asking people to donate to their "Dollars for Dinky" campaign. Department Head, Leslie Gray Baker says, " We aren't asking anybody for a large donation, although we'd be more than happy to accept one - what we really want is for people who are interested in their City, our history and the over all look of our community to help by donating just a dollar or possibly two. We need just about $14,000 and with our community's help, we should easily be able to meet that goal."
