Good NYC Steam books??
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, November 15, 2004 8:10 AM
I've seen the Stouffer book mentioned on the web. I'd like something that gets into the evolution and operation of modern NYC steam(~1925-1950's), not just a picture book. Is that the one to put on the Christmas list?

If you can find it, you might like Arnold Haas, Memories of New York Central Steam. It was published by Carleton Railbooks.

If you want a complete list of every steam locomotive, the books to get are "Steam Locomotives of the New York Central Lines. Vol. 1&2."These were written by the late William D. Edson and H. Lance Vail Jr.

Volume 1 covers basically Lines East of the NYC Lines and the B&A.

Volume 2 covers basically Lines West of the Big 4, , MC, P&LE and others.

Diagrams and photos along with technical detail are also included.

They may be purchased from the NYCS Historical Society.

Their web site is : www.nycshs.org
