Now, way back in the dark ages, the Katy actually had a "connection" between the KC and STL mains from Holden, MO to Paola, KS and ran some form of passenger service that way, but not by 1948.

The Katy route used the St. L. and K.C. sections of the Katy Flyer, with a pleasant six hour wait at Parsons Kan. from about noon to about 6PM.
There was also the joint Burlington-Alton route via Mexico between St. Louis and Kansas City; in 1943 it had an overnight train (the Nighthawk) and a day train.

Are we talking direct service here, or around Robin Hood's barn? Direct service would have been MOP or Wabash. Rock Island's motor car tied up about halfway, at Eldon, Mo. To take the GM&O, you'd have to go all the way to Bloomington, IL on their motorcar then back. The Katy would have been nearly impossible and actually more arduous that the Frisco at Springfield.
M-K-T's Katy Flyer from St. Louis to Parsons Kansas, and the Bluebonnet or some other train to Kansas City. Don't have an OG handy so I can't give connecting times.
ALL:
I thought I would start a new topic and I chose St. Louis to Kansas City. In referencing a July, 1948 OG, I found six possible routes: Wabash, MP, CBQ, SLSF (via Springfield and not convient connections), RI, and GMO.
Any others? I welcome comments and which would you choose as a railfan looking for mileage.
