ACL-SAL Merger

We're all SAL E units repainted black after the merger or was the lettering changed to Seaboard Coast Line on at least some of the units and the units kept in their light mint green color scheme?

Repaints after mergers generally happen as units are shopped with two caveats. One is funding. The other is motive power needs. I can't answer your question definitively but it probably took months if not years other then renumbering if needed.

Slightly off topic - the merger SCL livery on the E- units was the best execution of a black paint scheme that I can recall. Strangely, the large ACL style numbers on the pilot made it all the more attractive. Looked great with the stainless steel consist.

Renumbering and relettering of both ACL and SAL power came fairly quickly after the merger.  Repainting took more time.  I do remember seeing an ex-SAL GP30 on the former Monon at South Hammond in SCL lettering and numbering but still in the original colors.

BN locomotives were renumbered shortly after the 1970 merger, however the last locomotive was repainted about six years after the merger. As a side note, one X-NP ALCO roadswitcher was involved in a crossing after before it was repainted. The BN's legal department had to have the locomotive repainted into NP colors for the lawsuit to progress.

Renumbering and lettering of all Locomotives on the merged road was completed by feb 68, the ACL units were simply relettered, but several relettered (split image) former SAL units lasted in their original paint scheme until 1974-75,  Its beleived the last unit in SAL paint was GP7 962 (SAL 1782) repainted SCL Black/yellow in 1-76  the relettered former SAL Es ran in their light mint green with Red SCL Lettering until all were gradually repainted SCL Blk/ylw by late 1969. In 1971 the E8-9 units went to Amtrak, all SCL units repainted after 7/1/77 recieved the Family lines grey scheme.
