There were lots of short routes in commuter territories and on streetcar systems. Again what one really needs is a US Post Office Scheme book of any era to get a glimpse, I've seen two over the years and they can be most interesting as they list the how and where of routing US Post Office mail from Post Office to Post Office giving route numbers, train numbers, connections, etc.

RIDEWITHMEHENRY is the name for our almost monthly day of riding trains and transit in either the NYCity or Philadelphia areas including all commuter lines, Amtrak, subways, light rail and trolleys, bus and ferries when warranted. No fees, just let us know you want to join the ride and pay your fares. Ask to be on our email list or find us on FB as RIDEWITHMEHENRY (all caps) to get descriptions of each outing.

Chicago had some streetcar RPO's that were less than 10 miles, I'm not sure of the length of the runs.  They may have also existed in other cities.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

What was the mileage of the Suncook Valley between Concord and Pittsfield, NH?   Kingston - Narraganset Pier, RI, on the NaPr?  Indianapolis - New Castle on the Indiana RR?

Gotta find a US Post Office Scheme book of some period which would tell such info...

Short R.P.O. Routes
Posted by pajrr on Monday, July 28, 2014 7:57 PM

Hi Everyone, I just picked up a 1954 RPO cancellation from the Summit,NJ - Gladstone,NJ  RPO route, reportedly the shortest R.P.O. route in the U.S. This route on the Lackawanna, (now the NJ Transit Gladstone Branch) was only 22 miles long. Does anyone else know of short R.P.O. routes?
