What you need to do is look at CPRDieselRoster.com which has photos of virtually every diesel the CPR has ever owned from the beginning to the present. It has both black & white and colour photos through all of the different era's and colour schemes. Just pick an engine number you are interested in and click on it. A truly amazing site.

So shovel the coal, let this rattler roll.

Launch Pad Distributing, also known as LPD publishing, has produced a series of books covering Canadian railway diesel paint schemes.   CPR is covered in volume 3.  It should provide most of what you are looking for.

While the action red and multimark were introduced in late 1968 you could see some locomotives still in the earlier maroon & grey paint as late as 1976.  Over the course of time the multimark scheme evolved, with smaller multimarks on the GPs and SDs, wider stripes on the ends.  Then in late 1987 the multimark was no longer used included (and if) locomotives were repainted.  It can still be seen today on some locomotives.

As to the paint formulation I cannot give any useful advice.

John.
