GM&N Paducah Line?
Posted by NorthWest on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 9:04 AM

This map shows  a GM&N line running from Jackson, Tennessee, to Paducah, Kentucky. It doesn't show the line to Cairo, Missouri. Does anyone know if GM&N had a line to Paducah, trackage rights, or is the map wrong?

Thanks.

The map is correct as far as I know, the line to Cairo and St. Louis may have been part of the Mobile & Ohio.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

The line parallel to the GM&N that runs through Tupelo to Jackson TN is the Mobile and Ohio.  North of Jackson it heads for Cairo, Sparta and East St. Louis, but is not shown on the GM&N map (The IC lines are shown).  For an M&O map:

Up until 1931 or '32 the GM&N reached Paducah by trackage rights over the NC&StL from Jackson, TN through Bruceton. At that time it switched to using trackage rights over the shorter IC line from Jackson to Paducah. I'm open to correction by anyone who has better information but, as far as I know, neither the GM&N nor its predecessors ever ran to Paducah on its own rails.

I should have added that the Line shown in the GM&N map link from Jackson through Milan and Fulton to Paducah is actually the IC line over which the GM&N had trackage rights.

Thank you very much for all your help! I've done some more research, and I think Mark has it.

Once again, thanks.
