Hi Bob:  It's my understanding that the UP plans to do the restoration of 4014 in house at their steam restoration facility in Cheyenne. Wyoming.  They have an experienced crew of professional mechanics and, presumably, all the necessary tools, parts and equipment on hand.  I'm not sure what role volunteers would play in this process.  To find out, you might contact UP's Public Relations Department and see what they have to say.

BIG BOY RESTORATION
Posted by POWERBRAKEBOB on Thursday, October 17, 2013 12:47 PM

Greetings, Gentlemen!   I am fascinated by steam engines.  I am interested in participating in the restoration of Big Boy 4014.  I have often seen it at Pomona.  I have restored, every nut and bolt, ,my 1923 Mack "Coca Cola" truck, which is now in a museum.. I have done many frame off restorations of many cars. My company, Power Brake Service, has been in the custom and restoration business for 65 years. I am a volunteer on the USS IOWA restoration in San Pedro, and have appeared on 7 of the "Overhaulin'" TV shows.  Once, while driving over the Los Angeles river, I saw a "Brass Era" Steamer being craned onto the tracks after a full restoration in Union Pacific's own shop.  A real Beauty.
