Tenders were saved for all sorts of things. As mentioned as tanks for MOW equipment, fire fighting equipment (ACL did this), stationary water supply tanks, even reused as tenders on other types of locomotives such as the tenders for the UP turbines. There are actually still a bunch of them stashed around RR properties today.
It may well have been used as a tender for a steam pile driver or big hook after its locomotive was scrapped but that's just a guess.

At the Southastern Railway Museum they have the tender for L&N 2-8-4 1963. Does anyone know why the tender was saved from being scrapped while the locomotive was not?
