On the Smithsonian website they have a on the moving of 1401 to the museum, here is a link to the webpage http://amhistory.si.edu/onthemove/themes/story_31_1.html. It was moved in late 1961.

Looking For Some Info on Southern Railway's Ps-4 1401

Hello All,

I'm looking for some information on Southern 1401. I've gotten into a debate over whether or not, when 1401 was delivered to the Smithsonian, did or did it not have a white stripe on the pilot? I personally believe that it did have the stripe. Now I know while the locomotive was in service, it sometimes did and sometimes didn't have the white stripe. The white stripe all depended on which facility serviced the locomotive. Any info would be great.

Thank you,

-Ben
