Hi, Can anyone out there tell me where CNJ locomotive servicing facilities were located throughout the state of NJ? I know E'port, Communipaw and Cranford. Any assistance anyone can give me is appreciated.
Hello pajrr! Other CNJ engine terminals were at the following locations: Bethlehem Pa., Scranton Pa., Arlington and Tadmore Pa. (former Lehigh and New England facilities), and we can assume some engine servicing was done at the Raritan, Bay Head, and Bridgeton yards in New Jersey.
The major engine repair shops were at Elizabethport and Communipaw, the C-Paw yard even had two turntables back in the steam days. E-Port and C-Paw did the heavy repair jobs, but it's a safe bet light repairs could have been done at the other places I mentioned.
By the way, ever hear the "Jersey Central Song?" Goes like this, to the tune of "Auld Lang Syne"

Engines were turned at Bay Head Jct and laid over.
That was the NYLB. The Long Branch probably had servicing, surely to hostle the K4 and K4sa at steam's end in '57. Did it apply to the CNJ , did maybe the CNJ have their own mech. dept. rep'?
Yes, the CNJ definteily had a presence at Bay Head Junction to service their steam (mostly Camelback 4-6-0's, and yes I rode behind them, summer 1951, Fort Monmouth ROTC summer camp. Baldwin diesels were just beginning to make their appearance. But Bay Head had, still has, a loop, and I don't think it ever had a turntable. Anyone know? The PRR also had their own people. As far as I know, the NY&LB did not do any equpment maintenance on their own, not like the PRSL, whose people serviced both PRR and Reading power.
As far as I've read Bay Head never had a turntable, all turning was done with the loop track.
