They probably did not run to Detroit, because the Michigan Central had its own assigned locomotives that ran Buffalo - Detroit - Chicago via the Canada Southern and the MC line. In 1947, when the photo was taken, the Hudsons were probably assigned Buffalo - Cleveland, because Niagras (without streamlining of course) bumped them off the Harmon - Buffalo run as soon as they were available. At least that is what I remember from my NY - Detroit trips on this train at that time. I happen to like the ESE streamlining better than the Century streamlining.
I know they went at least as far as Cleveland, but I'm not sure about Detroit. Here is a shot of 5426 with the Eastbound ESE at Westfield NY between Buffalo and Erie Pa in 1947. Dear US railfans,I'm considering to delve into New York Central Empire State Express Hudsons services history: on the Web, sincerely, I have not found enough references with
regard to them. For example, I know there were only two of them, #5426 and #5429, and that both remained in service until 1950, although, from a certain year
on, partially deskirted and with another type of tender. However, I wonder if they went beyond Buffalo, reacheng Cleveland, Detroit, even Chicago. And if so,
which trains did they haul, apart from Empire State Express? The same ESE, if I'm not mistaken, once reached Buffalo, was split in two section: one for Detroit
and the other for Cleveland. Being not sufficient only two locomotives, which other locomotives did NYC use to handle these ESE sections?Thanks for your helping.
