Today, when GE or EMD builds a new locomotive for delivery in North America, it can be transported over the rails of any road, thanks to standard gauge. However, before standardization, many roads had their own unique rail width.
In the 1862 Great Locomotive Chase, Georgia's Western and Atlantic's gauge was five feet. The principal locomotives involved were built in Paterson, NJ. How then did they get shipped to the M&A?
