Can anyone tell me what happened to the original Missouri Pacific Pueblo, CO to Kansas City main line? does a short line own this route now? Thanks.
A lot of it is torn up.
The State of Colorado owns the right of way from Pueblo to the Kansas border. From the Kansas border to Healy Kansas is part of the Kansas and Oklahoma. From Healy to McCracken is abandon as the K&O choose to use the former Santa Fe Ness City branch as their mainline. McCracken to Geneseo is also operated by the K&O.
I think Abline & Smoky Valley operates the little jog to Salina From Gypsum.I don't know about the piece between Geneseo & Salina or to Gypsum. Nor do I know what if anything has become of the trackage east of Gypsum to KC.
The line is gone from Geneseo east to KC (with a couple of miles near Herington, KS in place for car storage). Also as Texas Zepher said, the line from Healy, KS to McCracken, KS was taken out a few years ago, and one of the last remaining depots on the line was torn down this year in Utica, KS. As for Colorado, it was recently announced that the line from Towner, CO to North Avondale, CO was sold to a scrap outfit that plans to tear it out this spring.
The rails of this line in Eastern Kansas have been removed...long ago. The service stop of
Hoisington was the 'eastern' terminus for the regional route as late as 2005. West of Hoisington the
line is derelict. I have not 'tracked' the area recently but even the signal boxes along the line have
been valdalized and so far as I know, there is no service. Last time I was out that way, rails continued
west of Eads, Co...but, who knows... The old crew change facilities at Horace, KS is served by one rail.
