N.Y.C.S. Hudsons....
Posted by Train-O on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 2:28 PM

Hi All,

I would like to know, did N.Y.C. ever have a gray paint scheme applied to their regular, un-modiifed

Hudson engines and tenders, similar only in color to their 20th. Century Limited?

Thank you,

Ralph

Don't remember ever seeing a pic of an unstreamlined 4-6-4 that wasn't black. I doubt Trains ever had such a pic, or any of the Staufer books.

Before the Hudsons were built, Beech Grove painted a Pacific in lined high gloss light grey but the colour scheme was not continued. The details are in Staufer's NYC Later Power.

I believe this was the gray with maroon stripes engine that was assigned to the James Whitcomb Riley when it was inagurated in 1939 or '40.

No, the locomotive I was describing was "Big Four" K-3k 6467 which was painted in early 1927. It was high gloss grey with black and aluminium colour lining. This was not a streamlined locomotive (hardly surprising at that date.)

Two K-5b Pacifics 4915 and 4917 were streamlined in 1936 for the "Mercury" and these were modified for the "James Whitcomb Riley" in 1941.
