Kansas City’s first flyover , Classic Trains Fall 2011 p. 14-15

Has anyone identified the type of the cars which are visible in the open ATSF auto-racks in the wonderful “True Color” picture “Kansas City’s first flyover” in Classic Trains Fall edition 2011 on p. 14-15?

I think on google earth street view you can see a KCS/UP Train on the same flyover (Y at Berger Av.)

Those autos are 1969 Plymouth Furys and Gran Furys and Dodge Polaras and Monacos.  I can't completely recall the assembly plant loading from that long ago, but those cars may well have been shipped from the St. Louis assembly plant in Fenton.

If you think this looks like a complicated , almost model railroad-like, junction today, you should have seen it in the 50's and 60's.     For me, with a brand new driver's license in 1962, this was a DESTINATION (note the caps)... even in the winter!     Some called it Santa Fe Junction, some called it Union Station Junction..I called it Chicago Junction.

Too many trains.   Darn.

My dad built what used to be Earle M. Jorgensen Steel Company's facility - you still see the buildings in the middle of all the spaghetti!    Needless to say, in the 50's I didn't have to be asked twice to "go look at the job".
