I just picked up Kalmbach special issue with losts of Classic train articles in it and
when I got to page 26 there is a 1957 view of Dearborn station with a C&EI train (#1)
to be exact. My question is who owned that ACF baggage car painted dark blue and
off white (silver aluminum to me ) on that train? I have never ran across it before.
The letterboard seems to say the complete name of the railroad but i can't make it out.
Classic Trains comes out every two months and there are quite a few Special Editions besides, so can't tell which one you are really talking about. However, your car sounds like Wabash or maybe L&N, Sounds common enough that you should easily be able to find it.
RIDEWITHMEHENRY is the name for our almost monthly day of riding trains and transit in either the NYCity or Philadelphia areas including all commuter lines, Amtrak, subways, light rail and trolleys, bus and ferries when warranted. No fees, just let us know you want to join the ride and pay your fares. Ask to be on our email list or find us on FB as RIDEWITHMEHENRY (all caps) to get descriptions of each outing.
Another thought on the car would be Nickle Plate (NKP) but they were in LaSalle St. not Dearborn station.
Henry - He noted the issue right in the subject line: "How to Model Railroads in the 1950's." On newstands now.
That's why I haven't seen it!
I definitelybelieve its an ex Wabash heavyweight painted to match
their streanlined cars but its not lettered Wabash but for
another roadalmost thinkits GM&O.But did Wabash sell it to them
and not repaint it but put their own name on it;just guessing.
by the way its a Model Railroader special edition Summer 2011
out now! For all you classic trains readers and subscribers
I suggest a trip to your local hobby store its a great read.
1957...Dearborn. Allowing for the fact that we have yet to told WHICH Classic Trains special issue this photo is from, I'm guessing that it's NC&StL since C&EI passenger trains operated over both the L&N and NC&StL before they merged.
A small correction to an earlier post in this thread: Classic Trains appears every three months and not two months. It is always stated as a spring, summer, fall or winter issue.
