Harriman (UP) 4-6-2 whistle and headlights
Posted by burbri45 on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 8:34 PM

I have two questions about Union Pacific harriman 4-6-2s--does anyone have an answer?

1. Later in their careers, the UP 4-6-2s had Star Brass 5-chimes, but what type of whistle did they have as-built?  Some photos show some type of three chime, while another photo shows LA&SL #408 (UP 3158) as having some sort of single chime.

2. If these locos were delivered with oil headlights (or so they seem, anyway), then why do they appear to have some sort of generator mounted in front of the cab? What was it used for?

Any other information about these locos may be helpful too.   Thank you for your help!
