I would like to know if the Pennsylvania RR's. S-2 locomotive ever headed a freight train?
Thank you,
Ralph
I'm sure that others will have much better info than me, but on page 29 of Don Ball's book he writes of the S2: "The machine went to work on the Fort Wayne Division and handled a range of assignments from general merchandise to the crack Broadway Limited." So perhaps in testing and trials it hauled a few freights?
This PRR forum would also be an excellent place to post your question:

Utley26,
Thank you for your quick reply and valuable information.
I will check for photos., on the forum you gave me.
Take care,
Yes, the S2 ran both freight and passenger trains when it was sent west to Crestline OH. Crestline to Chicago was a testing ground route for new power, particularly big power that had clearance and curve problems in the east.
Forgot to add as to photo's, look into Pennsy Power vols 1 & 2, they both have photo's of the S2, unsure as to what trains though. Also, should I come across any in the PRRT&HS Keystone magazine I will post the issue, I have them dating back into the late 80's.
There are a few pictures of the S2 here: http://crestlineprr.com/duplexexperimentals.html as well as information on some of the other locomotives serviced at the Crestline, OH facility.
