In today's (12/7/10) photo of Southern 5017, there is a snow-like light substance covering the main track; would this be sand buildup?
That's sand aright. Sand was used liberally by engineers when ascending the Saluda grade especially if the rails were wet or when covered with leaves in the late fall.
