McComb MS and Gloster MS
Posted by travelingengineer on Saturday, June 5, 2010 9:11 PM

As a new forum participant, may I respectfully ask if there is anyone who is acquainted with the railroad facilities of the ICRR in McComb MS and/or the Y&MV in Gloster MS, especially prior to 1945 going all the way back into the 1880s?  I have several ancestral connections with railroading there, and would be pleased to discuss, share, inquire, and otherwise communicate.

Thanks in advance.

Would the Holly Springs MS person who sent me an email message in response to my original post, pleae re-send.  Inadvertently, I deleted your email message from my computer before entirely awakening this morning.  Thank you.

Hi!

Easily your best bet for this info is from the Illinois Central Historical Society.  I believe its www.ichs.org , but I'm not certain.  You can Yahoo it and get the correct info.

Thank you for your post, "mobileman44."  Yes, I was a member of the Illinois Central Historical Society for a while, and enjoyed its Green Diamond magazine, especially its Panama Limited, City of New Orleans, and Y&MV (the "Yellow Dog") articles.  However, it seemed that it was primarily focused on latter-day ICRR and in IL specifically.  I got no responses to my RPO query regarding one Canton District matter (a train wreck).

Hi,

Sorry you didn't get a reply to your email to the ICHS.  Normally they are quite good at answering.

McComb has come up in a number of recent issues of the Green Diamond.  I suggest you go to the ICHS website and look up back issues.  As my area of interest is primarily Illinois and the '40s-'60s, I honestly have not paid much attention to your area of interst.  BUT, I have seen a lot of mention of McComb.

Give the ICHS another try!

ENJOY,

Thank you, "mobilman44," for your replies.  You convinced me!  Yesterday, I just sent in my request to rejoin the ICHS.  It had been my desire for a while to do so anyway, but was "put off" by ICHS not having a life membership option.  Of course, the answer to that is, "No."  But, I went ahead and sent in my 2010 annual membership fee anyway.  Am told, that with some extra $$$ which I included, I will be getting all of the 2010 publications to-date.  Hope, as you indicate, that there is some McComb MS content therein.  Thanks for your assistance and encouragement, sir.

P.S.  One other forum member (actually living in MS but apparently now just "lurking" on the forums) also replied to my initial thread post.  That person was most generous with offering assistance, and may be extremely helpful as soon as I can focus one particular area of inquiry.

Should there be any other kind soul who is acquainted with the ICRR in McComb MS ca. 1900-1945 and/or the Y&MV back in Gloster MS in the 1880s, I would still be pleased to make your acquaintance.  Thanks in advance.

Gloster was a small town on the Y&MV Memphis-Vicksburg-Baton Rouge-New Orleans line. In the late 30's and early 40's there were just two passenger trains each way on that line, the Vicksburg-New Orleans local and the name train, the Planter. Both stopped at Gloster which railroadwise had only a typical small town freight/passenger/Railway Express/train order station similar to thousands of others in small towns all across the nation.

McComb on the other hand was a division and crew change point on the IC's Chicago-New Orleans mainline. All the passenger trains, Panama Limited, Louisiane, Chickasaw, Creole and later on the City of New Orleans stopped there. It had an impressive station, roundhouse, yard trackage, and coal and water towers. In addition the IC had a shops complex at McComb where major repairs to,and rebuilding of, freight cars was done. Hope this info helps you.
