Another Question About Englewood
Posted by aricat on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 9:39 AM

Would it have been possible for the NYC and PRR to operate through service with the Rock Island to places like Kansas City, Denver,Omaha and even Dallas. Rock Island should have had a competitive advantage over Santa Fe and Burlington by serving Englewood.

Aside from the connection at Englewood and La Salle Street (NYC only), Rock Island was at an extreme disadvantage compared to Santa Fe and Burlington on the destinations mentioned above.  Also, any exchange of through equipment would involve a change of direction.

Some people did use Englewood as a transfer point between the PRR and  NYC and the Rock on interline trips.  But remember that the Rock had only one train to California, while the C&NW-UP combination and AT&SF had dozens.

Plus, you have to wonder if PRR and NYC had any interest, financial or otherwise, in running trains farther west, or joint venturing with the Rock at Englewood, when it would be pretty easy for passengers to complete the last 15 miles or so to downtown Chicago and then transfer over to one of the other nearby passenger stations and board the ATSF or other westbound railroad.
