Building diagrams for old Alcos. Are they available anywhere?
Posted by banjo1059 on Thursday, March 4, 2010 4:51 PM

Hello,

Is there a place where I can view/purchase building dimensions/diagrams for old Alcos, like an S3, or an S1, etc.?

I am a computer 3d modeler, and I would like to construct an old Alco from scratch.

Any help or pointing in the right direction would be helpful.

 Thank you,

Rich

I do not know how available they are where you live at, but there are a lot of diagrams for various locomotives and rolling stock items in a lot of the Model Railroader issues from the 1950's. Since ALCO was at it's peak for diesels in the 1940's-1950's, you might be able to find what you are looking for.

Train shows are the best for finding older MR issues, as you can typically look through an issue and see if what is in there is of interest.

There are plans for an ALCO-GE gas turbine (First Generation, UP 51-60 in a mid-50's issue that I would love to make a model of in TT scale (1:120).

Since the cab of the ALCO FA and the ALCO-GE 1st generation turbine loco is very close in design, I should be able to use a resin casting of my Kemtron TT scale ALCO FA for the nose, eliminating the most difficult part of a scratch-built cab unit diesel.

There are some ALCO locomotive associations on-line that may be a source of diagrams that you can use. There is a place called ALCo World that may help.

Good luck, and please post pictures of the models when they are done.

So many scales, so many trains, so little time.....

Thank you so much!

That was a very quick and helpful reply!  I will see if I can find some old issues of MR.

And yes, I will post some images when I have something worth looking at :-)

Hey, just to let you know, JT, I took your advice and bought a whole bunch of MRR mags from the 40's and 50's off of Ebay!

I'll let you know how it works out.

 Thanks again for your advice!

 Best,
