Atlantic Coast Line brass numbers
Posted by tockvock on Sunday, February 14, 2010 2:29 PM
Hi, I recently acquired some old brass numbers from an auction, and I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on what their purpose was. They came stored on a tag that said "Atlantic Coast Line Railroad," but there wasn't really much more description than that. I was thinking that they may have been seat numbers, but I'm not really sure. Here's a couple pictures:

As to the numbers, I do not think that they were seat numbers, certainly not for use in cars that had a capacity of about fifty seats, since each coach had its own series of seat numbers. I am not so familiar with ACL practices to even guess at the use of these. Do you have access to the Trains magazine forums? If so, you might want to post your question on the "General Discussion" forum, and an ACL expert may pick up on it.
