Dream Trains 2 Special Issue

Not sure if this has been covered already but I wanted to give a big "thumbs up" to the Classic Trains staff for the Dream Trains 2 special issue.  I had to limit myself to one article per reading session to keep from reading through the whole thing in one sitting.

I really enjoyed the artices on the California Zephyr as well as the article differentiating the different dome car styles and manufacturers.  Makes me wish I had an opportunity to ride one of the great Domeliners in their glory years.

I was one of those who was lucky enough to experience many of the dome trains of the fifties and sixties and it is to bad that everyone never got the chance. I was lucky enough to not only ride many of the dome trains but many of the different domes that were operated. I rode the Empire Builder, North Coast Limited Olympian Hiawatha, City of Portland, UP pool train from Seattle to Portland when it operated with the Train of Tomorrow cars. The Santa Fe Super Chief, Twin Zephyr, American Royal Zephyr, Kansas City Zephyr, City of San Francisco, Canadian, Panorama, Super Continental, Atlantic Limited and California Zephyr but only between Salt Lake City and Chicago.

It was a fascinating time to ride trains and the domes provided the scenery like nothing before or since. I guess one could say the Superliner lounges come close but there is no forward vision. My vote for the best domes were the short Budd domes and the UP ACF domes would be second. The Dome dining car on the UP was quite nice for a leisurely dinner. I got to ride the P/S full length domes on both the Milwaukee who originally owned them and later as sceneramic domes on the Canadian National. I give the CN full credit for the way they remodeled the dome level of these cars. Now I just need to find the time this summer to travel to Alaska and experience the Cruise ship domes there. I guess I am the only Alaska cruise passenger who is looking at the best domes instead of the ships for my Alaska trip. Are there domes I wish I had the chance to have ridden, MP Colorado Eagle, IC City of Miami, SP Coast Daylight, CB&Q Denver Zephyr, AT&SF San Francisco Chief, and the Florida Special when it operated a dome from Richmond to Miami.

I'll second that, but I screwed up.  Read the whole thing in one afternoon while trainwatching.
