Locomotive ID

A friend, whose grandfather worked for the Northern Pacific RR, has asked for my help in identifying a locomotive. I have to admit, I'm stumped here. Can anyone offer an assist?

Looks like one of the NP EMD gas-electrics to me.

Northern Pacific B6

Here is a side shot of the Northern Pacific B6. The website here didn't have a picture of B16.

If I get a chance tonight I'll check my "Northern Pacific Railway Diesel Era" book, I'm pretty sure that has a section on NP doodlebugs.

BTW you and your friend might want to look into joining the NP Historical Society....Smile

The book said B-16 was one of the EMC (Electro-Motive Corporation, which later became EMD, the Electro-Motive Division of GM) gas-electrics NP bought in 1922-24. Many were repowered with diesel motors in the fifties, and some lasted into the 1960's before being replaced by RDC's or passenger service was dropped on that line. They were used primarily on branchlines in rural areas like North Dakota, Montana and Washington.
