AHH, yes!   The wooden depot at Weehawken and the steam ferries...FPA's with mail trains under the Bear Mt. Bridge...and RS3's with the commuters...

...and up in the mts...that meandering line from Kingston to Oneonta...in 1955, at the age of 12, I found out about a Railroadians of America fan trip in Sept. and wished I could go, but didn't...riding behind Walter Rich's little teakettle on a special dinner train from Oneonta to Davenport in the early 70's was good, and fun, but didn't make up for the dissapointment of 1955...and likewise, riding the Delaware and Ulster Rail Ride has given only some consolation...got an old Blackhawk 8mm movie where the camera was supposedly mounted on the pilot of a locomotive at Rondout and rode all the way to, I'm really not sure anymore how far it went, but the date had to be circa 1910!!

Hi Grand Ave, The West Shore Railroad was originally the New York, West Shore & Buffalo Railway and was formed in 1880 from a number of smaller companies. It was essentially a nuisance road in that it was built to directly compete with the New York Central -- just as the South Penn began construction to directly compete with the Pennsylvania in its namesake state. The NYWS&B operated from Weehawken, via Albany, to Buffalo with a couple of feeder branches. The NYCentral bought control of it in 1885, reorganized it, and leased it (as the West Shore RR) beginning January 1st 1886. There is a general history of the company on Wikipedia, which you might find interesting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Shore_Railroad
