The last time I visited the museum was in the late '90's I think.  They had just finished a trial run on their only operating locomotive.   If I recall correctly, it may have been the Nickel Plate Road # 170, a Hudson.  Looking at the pictures on the web site, it looks like the one.  Regardless, as I remember, they rebuilt it, took it out for a trial run to ?Kansas City?, tried to turn around on light rail and put it on the ground.  They then limped home with a hot main bearing and were wondering if they could raise another $400,000 to rebuild it again. As I recall, they hoped to recover some money from the track owners or insurance.

Could someone correct my memory and tell me how the story ended? Is the locomotive operating?

IIRC the engine was SLSF #1522 a 4-8-2 Mountain that was restored to operation.
