Walschaerts Valve Gear filmed (looking for)
Posted by Walschaert on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 12:37 PM
I'm looking for moving pictures (a film clip) of a Walschaerts Valve Gear in action. I think that this invention symbolizes industrialization, progress, action and motive power like few other. I'm looking for a film clip that gives such associations. What could be better than images from a camera mounted behind and close to a walschaerts valve gear as a locomotive accelerates from stationary to high speed? Wheels sliding on the rail as they are impationately turned at start, steam snorting out of some valve, the accelerating rythmic sound of steam pressure pushing the piston and the straight rail ahead continuing to the horizon. Has this been filmed? If not, what would the prospects be to make such photos today, are there any suitable (rather high speed) steam engines with Walschaerts invention around in the world? And as a final option, could this be effectfully simulated with some software? Many thanks in advantage for any ideas about this! Bjorn

Don't know of any real film clips. There used to be a good computer video online, but it is gone now. However, check out this place. It has computer simulations of a whole bunch of different valve gears and you can vary the cutoffs and other things on them too:

I think Southern Pacific 745 (Mk-5 class 2-8-2) has Walschaerts valve gear. My video of the wheels and valve gear showing a slow-speed run-by is here:

However, you may well get something more like what you are looking for with the videos Ritchie Jacobs posted on YouTube. He likes to mount video cameras using poles and stuff, and has posted clips showing close-ups of the rods, valve gear, etc. in action, from a locomotive-mounted camera. I can't give you a direct link, but I know the videos were out there. Try searching on YouTube or maybe for a link at SP 745's operator's web site:
