Adjacent the water tank [in use] at Hermosa, there's a tank car body mounted, somewhat elevated, on concrete pedestals.  Purpose?? Is this just a supplemental water supply?? Or ??

It could be a shopbuilt oil or sand tank. But most likely a sand tower. It could also be a fuel tank, for gas or diesel, to fuel any diesel or MofW.

But do you have a picture of the tank car? It would be a great help in telling what it is.

The tank car is the main water tank at Hermosa.  I've heard that the original Hermosa tank no longer holds water, and essentially is a static display.

Does it even have the spout anymore?  Something in my mind is telling me it was taken off.

UPDATE

I knew the spout was removed, take a look at this photo

And here is a good photo of the tank car tank (note the spout looks like it's on the old wooden tank, but this is just an illusion).

I hope I didn't mislead anyone, these are not my photos.  I should have stated this in my first post.  The photos were taken by Carlos Llamas, and he maintains an excellent website with updates of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railway.

Here is a link to his website: Website Home Page

And here is the page where the tank photos came from: Tank Photos
