? for correct paint job of a WABASH J-1 class 4-6-2

Hello friends,

I have a few questions concerning a credible paint job of a WABASH J-1 class 4-6-2 steam locomotive. The model I intend to paint (after some superdetailing) is of the modernized version - that means with a cast pilot, Worthington feed water heater, hidden sand lines, and probably other details differing from the original composition. I want to paint it black. Does anyone of you know if

-the cab roof was red or black

-the cab window sashes were black or another colour

-there were any striping like running board edges and/or wheel tires, and if so, which colour

-the lettering was white or aluminium

-the characteristic flag would be correct on the tender sides, and if so, where exactly?

I hope anybody can help.

Thank you.

There is a web sight (that I don't know the address for) that shows color pics of Wabash steam engines.   The Wabash was one of the roads that extended boiler lagging over the smokebox so you will want to do only the smokebox front and that part of the firebox showing below the boiler jacket in dark graphite grey.   The only application of the Wabash flag that I kow of to a steam engine was to the smoke deflectors on the P1 class hudsons.  The normal practice was to put the engine number on the tender and :WABASH" under the cab window and the engine class under that.   The tender rear got the egine number in 6" letters, the water capy under that w/ 2 3/4" letters and the coal capy under that also in 2 3/4" numbers.   Lettering was silver.   Champ Decals is still in buisiness and migh still have a Wabash steam set EH 42 in stock.  (Champ@Minot.com)   The pics of Pacifics in my book on the Wabash show an even division of striped and non-striped domes.   Those w/ striped domes have 2 single (probably silver) stripes on both domes.   All have eng number on sand dome. All have srtriped running board edges, probably silver.  None have white driver tires.  I only have BW pics so I can't tell you the cab roof color but boxcar red would be my guess.  I can't tell you where I got the idea but, somewhere in the back of my head is the notion that Wabash had some Pacifics in blue.   Maybe somebody w/ more Wabash knowledge can fill in the blanks

Jim,

Thanks again for your help. Yes WABASH did have blue painted 4-6-2s. These were all of the J-1 class, and only three of them. I already have a blue painted one. These had dulux striping and lettering, looks beautyful. Few weeks ago I got a cheap second one unpainted and therefore want to paint it black - as most of them were. Now I think I know what I have to know to start the project.

Thank you.
