Diesel Quiz Part s*x
Posted by PBenham on Wednesday, February 7, 2007 4:23 PM

Well, since D&H crept into an otherwise Lehigh Valley set of questions, let us now delve into some D&H, both pre-and post 1976.

D&H dieselized with Alco power and stuck with them through thick and thin. So, what was D&H's first Alco diesel model and what was it's last Alco-purchased new-as opposed to acquired second or third hand.

Which model Alco became extinct on D&H first.

The first non-Alco had a feature in common with the Alcos D&H owned. What was it?

After the last minute deal for trackage rights that gave D&H the ability to compete with ConrailLaugh [(-D] they picked up units from which two Conrail components, as a part of their deal with the USRA?

D&H had already ordered some new units from EMD that they also acquired in the Conrail deal. Which ones? Extra cudos for those that can give the numbers on the units I am talking about. Big Smile [:D]

Finally, which PA was always identifiable in photographs no matter your ability to see its number. (For those of you in Rio Linda, or products of post 1990 public education, Which PA was vis...Disapprove [V]...didn't look like her three sisters. Or, was it four sisters?)Evil [}:)]

D&H picked up 12 C420 from the Lehigh Valley, 404-415. They would have been CR 2060-2071.

20 GP39-2 from Reading, 3401-3420, which became D&H 7401-7420 (CR 3400-3419).

12 LV GP38-2, 314-325, D&H 7314-7325 (CR 8163-8174).

D&H already had 20 GP39-2, beginning 3-76, 7601-7620.

I'll give it an uneducated go. The first  Alco was an RS-1, the last being the C-628's. I believe the C-628's were also the first retired. Not sure which model,  (want to say U28B) but it was a GE, and they had the same traction motors, as did most early GE's and Alco's. I think PA No. 19. One of them rode on C-628 trucks from wreck, didn't it? As far as a fourth, probably bought for parts.

The first Alco model on D&H was the S2, which was also the first to become extinct.

The first non-Alco (U30C's) had dual-controls.

PA D&H 17 was Obviously Different.

Did 17 have a 12 cylinder RS3 engine ?

Or was that the one that got parts from NH 0723 ?

D&H 17 lacked the trim piece behind the cab door, making it look like a PA3.  All of the PA's got 251 engines when D&H had them rebuilt.

Allrightythen. Well, the U30Cs DID have dual controls (Thank N&W for that) But, c'mon! Remember the question? What did the last Alcos (C628s) and first GE's have in common (U30Cs) I can't believe any of you haven't got that "best answer" yet.

I recall hearing from a Montreal area fan about driving to work and being stopped by the Naiperville Junction's local at a grade crossing. He darn near died on that spot when he saw the sharks roll by him. They had 5 chime leslies (Model?) on them, which to my understanding, they still have. Any one know?

Just for fun now another question which NH PA was the parts queen for the D&H? NH 0723 was a DL109, it would have been a parts source for their surviving S4s, but 0723 was scrapped quite a while before D&H bought the PAs from Santa Fe.

In a PERFECT World, D&H would have acquired the DL109!, put it on the Passenger, used THEIR S2s for Parts, and Regeared TWO of the PAs for Freight in a New D&H/ATSFish Freight Cab Scheme, making a Trip to Whitehall even more Fun with the LV Stuff there.

I feel ya, baby!

Now, D&H did fix the occasional Valley C628 that had come in ailing on NE84. They were really good on Alcos, so they could get a balky snowbird/white elephant up and running in time to catch NE87!

Five chime horns?! NYC/D&H #1205 & #1216 never had five chime horns, Leslie or otherwise. They still carry their twin Wabco AA-2 Pnuephonic single chime horns that they left Eddystone with 57 years ago. You can't miss them in the pictures, they carry two of those HUGE Wabco horns right above the engineer and helper!

Matt, That's what I get for believing what I hear in dubbed sound videos! I've looked at Pics of them and you have it right. They kept their WABCOs, despite an attempt to purloin one in their Michigan hideout.

Well, time to close part s*x. C'mon, no one knew that the C628s and U30Cs had the same traction motors. Class, no fruit cup!Disapprove [V]Black Eye [B)]Mischief [:-,]
