Relaxing at home today and watering the lawn (recent rains have been very stingy around here) after returning last night from some R&R up in Duluth, MN. Stayed five nights in the Canal District. Fascinating watching the ore boats come and go under the lift bridge. Thursday we rode the North Shore Scenic Railroad's Two Harbors turn- about an hour and 15 minute ride up, couple of hours during lunch to wander Two Harbors, and then the return trip. Hopefully I'll get some pics uploaded to the PC/hosting site here this weekend so that I can share a couple.

Yesterday was almost like the good old days for me (except that I had lunch with Pat instead of going out and grabbing it on the road). I rode the scoot from Lombard to Oak Park, waited almost two hours, then rode one back to Elmhurst, then back to Lombard on the next hour's scoot.I won't say things were busy (they weren't), but a couple of good trains yielded enough sightings to keep me busy here at the keyboard for a while. There's a whole bunch of "new" gondolas on UP (CHTT 722000 series) that's going to occupy me much of this afternoon, and some former coal-train quick-dump hoppers that are going to an iron company in Utah (nobody thinks they'll survive that service!). And a former GACX Airslide car that's being used as a buffer car on ethanol trains.

Ns was clear after work today.Ran errands in town.Mother nature iss ending some rain as well.Wed. the guessers say the ditches will fill up.Larry know the feeling about the pictures.Happy to take some for visitors.It was done for our family when Matt was a mini-onionhead.Off to do chores.

Not really. Engineer means running the locomotive and often working alone, including getting stuck in the cab (as I did today) babysitting the train while other stuff is going on. But, as they say, I get to ring the bell and blow the horn (among other things). I did end up as engineer today.
Our "short turn" Utica-Thendara is running now (fall colors, you know) and one of the three tracks at the station is committed to the rail bikes, so for the Utica train to do it's run around, the local has to go "hide" out of the way.
Being conductor, on the other hand, means meeting the passengers, which can be quite interesting. I'll usually ask where they are from, generally. Answers run from areas around NY state to out-of-state visitors (and the occasional international traveller). I'll often share history of the line and help point out scenic highlights. Our PA isn't working, so I can't narrate for the entire train. Thus, groups get snippets.
One favorite question on my part is to ask groups of passengers where the waters of the Moose River will be in a week. We run alongside the river for most of our trip on the "local" train. I call it a geography quiz. Some people jump right on it with the right answer. Many think it will be in the Mohawk or Hudson Rivers. "In the ocean" is almost right, but not for another week or two.
The correct answer is Lake Ontario.
And I can't even guess how many vacation albums I'm probably in. I tell folks it's in my job description.

When conducting, one young boy got off and said to me, "That was super peachy neat Oh!" it was an expression I have never forgotten.

Plenty of long trains on CSX in Deshler.Plus hurry up and wait when I left.Saw the Katy unit go east as it passed q 171 at Holgate on the way home.Plenty of new people at the park as well.Almost time for bed.Back to work tomorrow.

I'd be more concerned about the fact that the two 20s down in the well are topped by two more 20s. A 40-foot box (or anything longer) would lend more stability to the load.

Container 'tanks' are constructed within the standard 20 foot rectangular end posts of the standard 20 foot box containers.

Ns sent 9 engines(1 was CP) west with a Carl special after work.Came home and took care of the yardwork.Matt has been cleared to go back to campus.We will do that Saturday.Sunday will be the picnic in Deshler.Next weekend is the Fostoria train show,the Nkp 765 in Bellevue and a model railroad clinic in Marion.Time for supper.
Wish I could join the festivities at the park, but it's a bit far. Besides, I'm engineer on Saturday (and maybe Sunday)l
Got the old pressure tank and old water heater out of the basement. Next stop is the transfer site.
New pump probably will go in the well next week. Looking forward to not hearing the pump run in the basement. I got a large-faced guage, though, so I can see what the pressure is easily.

Matt now has a cast.It is Red.Doctors say 6-8 weeks.Went down to my nephews shop as well today to pick the signs for our model railroad at home.As far as train we saw local work on Ns in Maumee.I also saw the ND&W bringing in 2 cars to Defiance.The switcher at a grain elevator in Latty Ohio(ns former nkp line) was also switching cars around as well.Time for supper.

Day two of the train show in the books. Attendance still down, but it was a good crowd. Got a couple of good deals, too.
Now I've got to run the show kit back down to Utica. There's another show up this way in a couple of weeks, but I'm not sure I'll be covering it. If I do, back to Utica...
In the meantime, I think I'm going to finally make the transition from a deep well jet pump to a submersible. I think there's a leak near the foot valve (again), so I might as well make the change, since I've got to pull that 70' of tubing out of the well anyhow...
When we moved in here, there was only a 20' pipe running down into the 75' deep well, with a shallow well pump. We often got ahead of the well then, and far less so with the deep well jet. Might still get ahead of the well with this, but at least it will prime itself when the well recovers. The wonders of country life...
Went and checked on Brother.Ns ran a carl special westbound.Amtrak 49 also came west.Went to Deshler to finish up projects.Csx ran a few trains.Back to work tomorrow.
Day one of a local train show is under our belts. Attendance was down a bit, but after a year's break and everything else that's going on that's not really surprising.
Had plenty of visitors to the booth. Many had already ridden the railroad and most of the rest want to.
Went to work at Deshler yesterday.Put in some parking strips.Csx was running as usual.(where is the crew for this big train).Ironic though that q 369 only had 9 cars to come west.Did chores here at home today.Matt is still recovering.Going to get the groceries out of the car.

Things are warm and quiet on the home front. My 'bedtime music' of late are VR Camera channels and I've noticed a rush of traffic at Flagstaff between 11pm-1am-ish nightly - coincidence?
It is carrot season as viewed on the Chehalis WA camera, giving Edison CA competition as 'North American Carrot Capital'. The frozen food plant across the tracks is processing / cleaning outdoors; the carrots are dumped into a pile from a large container truck and are scooped up by a small skid loader. As I've seen critters around the tracks at night, not going to ask about the completeness of the ingredient list ....
