I had suggested several months ago that it might be interesting to tack the Diner on to the Newfoundland Railway. The Newfoundland Railway was a narrow gauge line (42") that was started in 1881 and ceased operations in 1988. It played a crucial role during WWII in helping the Allies get personnel, equipment and supplies to Europe.

Dave, this sounds fascinating. I support this 100%.

I will not be contributing.

Hi Kevin,

I think you have done more than your share of contributing throughout the May Diner. You obviously must have your camera at the ready all the time!

By the way, you should have done your drywall sanding before you went to the convention with your daughter. You could have called the white powder 'pixie dust'!Smile, Wink & GrinLaughLaughLaugh

Cheers!!

Gidday Chloe, I wouldn’t mind trying one of Kevin’s Anchor Steam Beers, please. but I rather suspect that after “Ole Dusty” washing down all that dust, there’ll be none left.

Fresh mangoes, not commercially available here, there was a mango tree at the back of the hanger, that I worked in, at Nadi Airport, Fiji. They were in season the first time I was there, and the locals would finely chop a small very hot small yellow chilli into a tablespoon, or thereabouts, of salt and dip the slices of freshly picked mangos into the mixture. Hot, sweet, and salty, what a taste sensation!!!Dinner

York1john, after lurking for over a year, I decided upon joining the Forum, that I’d put my location on the onscreen information along with my “name” and avatar. This was to avoid trying to look like a complete idiot, if I inadvertently used NZ railway terminology/ NZ English. Not sure if my cunning plan actually worked??!! I added the “Comfy Cave” a few years ago,  from memory??!!

Mr.TF, I had to check but see that I’ve got 9 albums put out by Big Big Train, and to be fair, find it hard to say which is the best! To be perfectly honest, the musical genre what I listen to depends on my mood at the time. That said,” English Electric Pt 1 & 2” is probably as good as taster as any. The good thing is that there’s a fair bit of their material on YouTube to sample.

Enjoy…

Oh well, I should have an earlyish night, I’ve an early Sunday morning drive to look at an aeroplane with I, 99.9%, suspect just an indication problem, but I’m not about to put a pilot under pressure to bring it home. I’ve already been to work and got the tool box on the back of the ute, and Her-in-Doors has said she’d like keep me company, though she’ll expect me to buy her breakfast, once the problems sorted.

Good morning, everyone.  Bacon, eggs, and black coffee, Flo.

Kevin, the work looks good.  I bet you can't wait until it's finished.

We're headed out of town to see family (to take more grandchildren photos).  I'll check back in when we return home.  Not real anxious to pull into gas stations along the way!

Have a good Labor Day Weekend, everyone.

Good morning

I was successful in postponing grocery day until tomorrow morning.  There is two car shows and a cruze rally tonight.  Wouldn't you know it, the weather forecast is a 60% chance of rain today.  The Stang hasn't seen any water in over 30 years.

Old classics are in the category of running up to the farmhouse with the cows to stay out of the rainLaugh  I restored all the lower panels with new metal but unless they're restored 100% taking all the body panels off down to the frame, there's always underlying rust somewhere underneath.  It remains dormant but ready to bubble through the paint if you keep getting a 50 year old car wet.  Last forecast the rain has moved out this morning.  It looks iffy but I ain't getting any younger so we're thinking about it.

I would have to agree with the type of mood you're in for what type of music listened to Bear.  My CD collection goes across the living room on either side of the fireplace on the custom built-in shelves.  The overflow stored in the under cabinets as there's no room for them all.  The variety of flavor ranges from Metallica to Bach and Beethoven.  They're not alphabetized but somehow if I think of a song I know exactly where it is.

I miss the sport of vinyl on a quality turntable and an expensive needle.  I would have to agree with the many that vinyl has the best recording sound.  Crisp.

We have one of the few remaining large music stores called The Electric Fetus in Minneapolis.  It's rare if they don't have something you're looking for with music from all over the world.  The last piece of music I purchased from there was called Buddha Bar.  A mix of composers made for a supper/nightclub in France that I heard on vacation in Mexico.

Better you than me sanding drywall KevinLaugh  I don't remember the last time I had to sand drywall but your room looks like it's coming along nicely.  If you stated which room it is, I may have missed it and hoping it's your Train RoomStick out tongue

P.S.  Have a fun safe trip visiting your Grandchildren John.

Wherever you decide to place the Diner next month is fine with me Dave.  Thanks for hosting as it is appreciated.

You obviously must have your camera at the ready all the time!

Yes I do... guilty. I also stay off of highways as much as possible.

A lot of times I simply drive by the compass. If I know the next main road I need is to the North, I will take the smallest back roads I can find. As long as I generally am heading North, I know I will eventually get to where I should be.

On one trip, we were supposed to be heading to Virginia from Ohio. Driving by the compass I ended up in Pennsylvannia. I turned around, and a few hours later I was in Kentucky. Then I drove across West Virginia. What should have been a 5 hour drive took 14 hours! The route was shaped like a "Z", but we had a blast.

I find so many great things to photograph when we are on the backest of the back roads.

I am fortunately blessed to have a travel companion, my wife of 35 years, that really enjoys doing this with me.

Good Afternoon,

I mowed the front lawn for the first time this year yesterday. Sunny and nice now but showers are set to move in for 3 days.

Got the booster shot Thursday. My wife isn't speaking to me as I wasn't being careful enough with potential covid contact at the pharmacy despite 2 masks and glasses. Perhaps it has gone farther than just being angry, says she doesn't trust me .

Dave, Newfoundland is fine with me. The only province I have not visited but would like to. CN Lines has done a few articles in past issues on the railway. I will dig them out but we won't be able to use them as I am sure they are copyrighted.

Afternoon folks!

I have been scouring the house for a pair of mic stands I supposedly still have.  I thought I had them last January when we tried to set up outdoors for the MLK Celebration here in town.  Well....  They are in hiding or got sent home with someone else.  Possibly the pastor of one of the churches.  I need to use them this coming Saturday for an Eagle Scout Celebration. (sigh)

My sister (who knows everything about everything.  You could ask her but you don't have to.  She will tell you every chance she gets.....) caught COVID a few days ago.  I am very surprized it has taken her this long.  When she goes out to restaurants (and other places), since you no longer have to mask, she get up and close to socialize constantly.  I'm talking about a foot from peoples faces.  She also is a touchy feeley person and is constantly touching peoples faces, arms, etc.  She went out with a couple new friends last weekend and last Wednesday evening she calls me rasping, coughing, and unable to catch her breath.  She wanted me to come right over to her house so she could have someone there to be with!  Yeah, Right!  I told her to call 911.  She finally did and got an ambulance ride to the emergency room.  They didn't find her bad enough to keep in the hospital so sent her home.  She calls me at 11:45 to ask me to drive 20 miles to the hospital and give her a ride home!!!

Luckily I was already in bed for the night.  She wouldn't call a taxi of course 'cause that would cost money! Whistling  A nurse drove her home after her shift was over after midnight.  (Both of them were wearing N95 masks..... but still.)  She can't understand why I wasn't still up at midnight waiting to be a good brother and  provide taxi service for her (And probably demand I stay the night while she infects me....).

Good morning Diners.  A full English please, Chloe.

Brent.  There was a time Dawn was much fitter than me.  She would put her name (and mine) down for charity races.   Every year we did a 24 hour 'Relay For Life'  for a Cancer Charity.

Now, for her,  somedays are good  others not.  One thing we bought was a scooter.    The best thing for Dawn.   Now she is not totally dependent on me.

I will always have one or two set aside for you!

You’re a gentleman, Kevin, thanks.

On our recent train trip to the Central Plateau, we visited the Ohakune Railway Museum, run by volunteers. The building furthest away is the former Railways Store, relocated from the redundant Raetihi Branch. The museum is full of interesting stuff from around the area, including several displays including a diorama depicting the Tangiwai Rail Disaster of Christmas Eve 1953, where 151 out of 285 crew and passengers on the Wellington to Auckland Night Express died.

ORM by Bear, on Flickr

Here's a video that’s reasonably accurate…

The two guys who expanded on the diorama were very knowledgeable regarding the accident, though as they explained that that night was very confusing for those there, and in fact one had been as a 16-year-old. He did say that he’d been confused but had seen sights that no one should see.
These guys, along with other locals were instrumental in getting a memorial, in 2017, commemorating the driver and the fireman who tried hard to stop the train applying the brakes and sand, and stuck it out till the inevitable end. They are now acknowledged for keeping three of the carriages and the guard’s van on the track.

So, what’s with this photo???

Lockers by Bear, on Flickr

Locomotive Driver Charlie Parker and Locomotive Fireman Lance Redman were assigned locker 21 and 19, respectively. You will note that there are blue crosses on the top right hand of the doors indicating that these particular lockers were never to be used again. To me, a sobering artifact.

And on a lighter note.

Whacked. by Bear, on Flickr

Also, good to see photos from a proud Grandfather. Home of the Hilltoppers??? I guess Ohio isn’t as flat as I had assumed!

We have had lots of trips to the usual specialist in the last couple of weeks as her decline has been so rapid. Not much they can do other than ease the pain. She may rebound yet, it is wait and see. Lots of lifestyle adjustments are being made without much advance warning. Medical care has been top-notch which helps a lot. Summer travel plans are being re-evaluated.

Love the "Bear" puppy tunes. I was lucky to get in and out of the pen without the usual pirana attack.Laugh They will be going to their new families in two weeks. There have been people here most days training them already. This helps determine what dog is good for what job in life and where and who they go with, be it a family pet or a working dog.

All the best to all.

This one?

Sewell, West Virginia.

Just wrestled the old king-size mattress out of the bedroom so I can shampoo the carpet before the new bed comes. That thing was a hand full, I only moved it into the hall as the company bringing our new bed is taking it away. Trying to hold that upright and move it must have burned a few calories.Laugh

At least your intentions are for a better purpose.  I bought one of those split king Movie Star beds for Judy as a Christmas present.

I think they are way overrated.  I sleep better but I still don't see it.  You could tuck me in under a bridge with a rock as a pillow and a little blue blankie and I would sleep just fine.

The deluxe Sleep Number was about half and the Stearns & Foster about a third but I like to keep her happy.

I hope your misses starts feeling better soon Brent.  Judy and I are pulling for the both of you my friend.
