My Madigascar Palm has shed its leaves for the Winter. It is not actually a Palm Tree at all.

With the foliage gone, a large wasp nest was revealed. This was less than ten feet from my front door!

The nest was destroyed after I took the pictures.

So sorry to hear of Garrys death. Though I never met him I feel I knew him and considered him a friend. I can only echo others who found him unfailingly kind. I will miss him, Garrys sense of humor and his photos and posts. Most sincere condolences to his family.       J.R.

 Well doesn't this add to what has already been a week for the books. As Rich stated Gary was a true gentleman/gentle person that I will miss. He joined the forum shortly after I did if I remember correctly, back in those days there were some nasty people that tried to cause a lot of trouble, and when it came to the racist in the crowd I just could not sit back and keep my mouth shut. Gary would PM me way back then when his PM function would work, offering me support and telling me to just ignore them and let the moderators take care of it. We had some good chats way back when. Through our conversations, it sounded like his home life and family were just what one could have asked for. I bought a bottle of the good stuff to help relax from the long wet days we are going through, I will raise a glass for Gary tonight if the phone stops ringing.

Just got back from picking up a couple of thousand pounds of specialized feed and distributed it around. The death toll is in the hundreds of thousands for the agricultural industry. The saddest to see is all the drowned calves. This area supplies more than half of all the dairy and poultry to the province and it has been decimated.

I have sat down to post a few times but the phone would ring and off we would go. I had to get the saw out and clear three trees before I could even get off the street. 

We bought some pumps and decided we had one more than we needed so I wanted to get it back to HD so someone else could use it as the shelves were empty. I was met by people out in the parking lot offering me big money for it, I said to the guy I sold it to, just give me what I paid for it and it is yours. I am glad I went to take it back as he was desperate.  

The weather people are saying that it was a once in 500-year event, I can believe that. I have been to a lot of places on this planet and sat through many tropical downpours. On a flat island with some palm trees, the rain falls and runs into the ocean, here in the land of mountains, streams, and rivers it is not quite that simple. You could say we got ripped a new one in every valley that carries water.

We live on the high ground at 90m. Our property has a 4% slope. Even though we are at the top of the hill the water was pouring out of the storm drains, it has never even come close to doing that before.

The West coast is cut off from the rest of the country and they don't even know when the rail lines will get back up. The ships are already piled up at the anchorages along the coast and cannot divert anywhere else as they are backed up everywhere. An awful lot of container traffic bound for the U.S. mid-West and the Gulf States comes through Vancouver with CN running what they call "hot shots" through to these areas.

I don't think there will be shortages of anything, however, while I was out helping out where I could the wife surveyed our food supplies and said we can eat like kings and Queens for seven months and had 105 liters of gas on hand. She then fired up the generator just to check it worked. It better have worked, I took the thing apart and gave it a complete service during the dog days of last summer. She then contacted the inlaws and other elderly people we often take meals to and got a list of groceries they needed and she went and spent $1400.00 at Costco and delivered it all to them.

We only lost power for a few seconds here and there as the water caused a brief short and did not lose internet. I have said it before on this forum, those that are prepared for these times are great and it makes helping out each other easy. Those that are not are a pain in the ass. The one guy down the road has been trying to hire people for a bunch of issues he is facing and of course, he is on his own in this mess, the pros are looking after their own families or helping with more important things.

311 people, 26 dogs a cat and 1 chicken to safety in Agassiz after landslides trapped drivers on one section of road in British Columbia.

 

It is still an hour and a half till happy hour, though I will hold off because the phone will surely ring.

Phooey, I just read of Garry's passing. He ws a really nice person. I met him the one time along with Kevin. 

if I were not in Mississippi I would go to his memorial service.

With all due respect to each and every other member of the forum, let me say that Garry was the kindest, gentlest member of this forum. His modeling skills were exceptional. I never met Garry personally, but I consider him a friend. My sincere condolences to his family.

Along with all the other damage, a lot of pipelines are shut down as are many Hydro routes due to washouts. This will affect the U.S. as well as B.C. supplies a lot of power to the South of the border.

Brent, I am glad that you are okay. Thanks for sharing the videos and the photos. The level of destruction is devastating. I hope BC can recover quickly, although I can see that some of the damage will obviously take months to repair.

I met him the one time along with Kevin. 

That was a great day. I had a copy of the picture of the three of us in front of Garry's magnificent bridge scene. I cannot remember what I named the file, and I cannot find it.

I will open Weekend Photo Fun in a couple of hours with a special post for Garry. If you have a copy of that picture, I would love for you to share it in that thread.

We don't get much news at all about the devastation in Canada.  Of course, we don't watch TV at all, let alone the news, so our visibility into that is somewhat limited.

If it's any consolation, my former father-in-law had a hip replacement when he was 85 years old.  He did it to get back on the tennis courts, and he did.

I realise the topic this month is 'War on the rails', so this may be a bit of a strech but,...

I believe this could have been used to transport troops

I somhow mannaged to upload all these pictures at once to postimage, ( never have been good with compooters) so, ... YAY, Timmy lernt something new !

Also: I recently got a brass locomotive for my birthday, but the tender has corroded and has decaying foam all over it . I gave it a bath in vinager, but that didnt really help. I also 'discovered' that its Brass plated copper, and the plating is coming off.

Anybody have any suggestions as to what I can do to get rid of the stains / corrosion.

I normally would just hit it with some Laquer thinner, ... but  I'm thinking  "Tarnex" may be my onlr hope.

After a long, hot, frustrating w**k day, my mood was not improved late last night, by the news of Heartland Garry’s passing.

However, after a far better day, (I actually achieved what I set out to do); on reflection Garry did mention occasionally his major medical “meltdown” requiring a major medical intervention, 13 (??) years ago.

 

So, my deepest condolences go to Shelley, who he mentioned with great fondness, his family, and his close friends.

 

But of those 13(??) years, as a forum member for the last 10 years, I got to appreciate that not only was Garry, a Gentleman in the true sense of the word, but a fine modeller, (if I can get my layout scenery flow as seamlessly to the backdrop half as good as Garry’s, I’d be a pretty happy chap), and a “terrible” Punster!

 

And even though I’ll miss my weekly CB&Q fix, I feel thankful for small mercies.

As I have been working on a landscape wall project for the past few days that nearly wore me out... I decided it was time to invest in a small concrete mixer.

This should save me a lot of time, which is in tight supply right now.

My countertop was supposed to be installed yesterday in my closet. They called and said it would be delayed until today. Today they did not show up and did not call. I am pretty upset about that.

The drawers are all stacked in the living room right now. I want to get this done!

Good evening, it was a rather quiet day today, the calm after the storm. Things should really start to crank up tomorrow to get things back to normal. They started gas rationing today as the pipelines have not been able to start pumping again. Someone suggested Washington State will help fill the shortfall in the fuel crunch but somehow forgot that Washington State gets a lot of its oil from Alberta down the rail lines that do not exist anymore. I have lots of gas on hand so we don't need to worry. The roads are very empty, I was going down the eight-lane on the edge of the flood zone and was the only one I could see on the Hwy in either direction for a while.

The passport requirement for Canadians going to the U.S. has been lifted for the first time since 911 so a lot of people that are trapped here can head East via the U.S.

If I was still working I can't imagine how crazy it would be. I worked 52 hours straight once when we had a major event happening. You only get tired when you have time to think about it. 

It's early but I think it is rack time, who knows what tomorrow holds.
