U50C or U50BB

I have been considering modeling the Burlington/UP in the 1960's era. I've been searching around for models of u50c's or u50bb's. The only ones I've found are u50bb's made by Overland. Although these are excellent looking models, I don't have the money to spend on them, their just over my price range. I can't find a model of a u50c though. Does anyone know where I can find either of these models?

I assume you are talking HO since you mention Overland. I don't think they were ever made in HO. I think they were or are in N however. Both Bachman and Athearn make DD-40's the EMD competitor to the U50's. A U50 should be easily doable as a kitbash and could be a fun project. You might also get published if you document it since it hasn't been done before.

Your message is garbled some. The U25's and U50's weren't turbines they were straight diesels but all have been published in the magazines over the years both turbines and GE's.

HO scale U50C and U50BB units were available in brass back in the 80s if my memory serves. I remember seeing them advertised in Model Railroader back then. I remember a rep from the model railraod shop I frequented telling me that they looked good but ran like "rock crushers".

You might find a used one if you put a WANTED notice in the MRR adds or on e-bay. Otherwise, it's a kitbashing project. I've always liked these neat, rugged looking engines.

The Athearn model isn't a DD40X, its a DD35. The Bachmann model is a DD40X. DD40X's had wide cabs.

well, OVERLAND had BOTH - U50C and U50D

U50C - five versions in December 1997 - factory painted

U50D - two versions in February 2002

I think at least the U50C was produced earlier as well, but I am NOT sure!

Remarkable: BOTH runs when set apart will keep that distance on the MILLIMETER even after having run for more than 20 meters!! Excellent products and worth the money!

I have photos of three versions of the U50C and both versions of the U50D

Yes, the Bachmann model was a DDA40X, but the Athearn model is technically a DD40X. The DD is for eight axles, the A is for wide cab, 40 for 40 series, and the X signifies that the unit has a few Dash 2 components. A conventional (not standard because wide cabs are king these days) cab equipped DDA40X would be labeled a DD40X. The Athearn model's prototype was never built(although it was proposed by EMD). It's not a DD35 because it has the 40 style radiator fan setup (three large fans). DD35's have two large fans sandwiching one small fan. In case you've heard enough, I'll quiet myself down now.
