Flintlock76By the way, if you haven't seen "1917" do so! Great film! Can't beat it as a period piece, attention to detail is superb! The story? It's a story.
Ah yes, "The Alien enemies Act of 1917" and the quasi-governmental "Council of Defense" mobilizing chapters across the country to bully and coerce German-Americans to demonstrate their loyalty through means often not short of duress. Those were the days!
I'm a bit reluctant to comment on school closings since I have no kids of my own. I'm not sure what to think. On one had I think two week closings may bit a bit excessive, on the other maybe one week isn't enough. It's certainly going to cause disruptions in homes, as in, parents wondering just what they're going to do with the kids for two weeks. And if it's a two-income household?
And at any rate, those two weeks are going to have to be made up sometime.
But as was stated earlier children don't seem to be affected all that much, if at all.
It's a judgement call I probably shouldn't critisize.
One call I think was extemely foolish was the Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey advising people to buy two week's worth of groceries and home supplies. All that's done is exacerbate panic buying. The governor of Viginia, a doctor himself, has made no such call. That doesn't mean the panic buying hasn't reached here too.
I just read an interesting on-line article on CNBC where, in a nutshell, psychologists have explained the panic buying as a manifestion in some people of an assertion of control, a reaction to a situation where they feel they have no control at all. Makes sense.
Anyway, the wife and I haven't changed our shopping habits at all. We even went out to dinner last night at a new barbecue place that just opened. Considering this is a rough time to open a business like that we wanted to help the proprietors a bit. Cars in the parking lot usually lead to more cars in the parking lot. Know what? It worked! And the food was damn good too!
Corona-19 has been stated as more contagious than its cousin SARS.

Huh?
I know what you're talking about but it's a BRITISH film, why would they mention American mis-governance?
Flintlock76but it's a BRITISH film, why would they mention American mis-governance?
Your mention of 1917 inspired my recall of other contemporary events. According to accounts I've read, the local chapter of the Council for Defense even went door to door demanding that German Americans buy war bonds on the spot just to prove their loyalty. Those who did not give freely enough were deemed disloyal and subjected to physical intimidation, and when even that failed to produce the desired results many were summoned to defend their non-compliance in self proclaimed Council of Defense courts, (despite the Council having no authority to administer trials whatsoever). Many of those targeted for such harrassment had been local residents since the 1840s and 1850s.
Indeed, she's a grande olde flag, warts and all.
BaltACDWent out for my normal afternoon walk - I don't, in 12 years of walking this neighborhood, I have ever seen so many people out walking or running - EVER - and the temperature is in the low 50's with a 5-10 MPH North/Northeast wind.
My wife and I can't go to the park districts recreation center (avoid crowds) so we took a walk and saw three other couples walking. Maybe those in your neighborhood were needing exercise.
Glad to see something positive. Here is some advice from a friend regarding how you can help should you know someone in isolation, whether or not they are actually sick. I've tried to comply with the rules by removing specifically religious advice, but if there are complaints, post them, and I will edit accordingly.

I just want to know one thing, who is going to pay for this vacation I am supposed to take?
And, just one more reason to be glad I don't live in the crowded city...........there are deer in the back yard, and I am a good shot.
I'm at work as usual.........

Have seen deer making nocturnal visits to my driveway. A corn field is about a 10 minute walk from the house. See deer from time to time in the city's linear park.
It is tough to work remotely when all your not working is done at home already account retirement.
Never too old to have a happy childhood!

Isn't the deer season in Maryland for firearms in late fall?
I don't think hunting seasons apply when deer are eating your garden. I'm not a hunter but that's what I've heard. Mmm... venison!

DeggestyCould that be classified as protecting your food supply from invaders?
It likely varies from state to state, but I think the accepted term is "varminting"
Well, just got back from a supply run
Needed to go by the local IRS office for tax forms, had to submit to a weapons check AND a "touchless" body temperature screen...both seemed reasonable. They had all the common forms but were completely out of Schedule C, it's instructions, and form 8965 and it's workbook, with a near zero likelihood they will restock by deadline time
Went to Walgreen's,...none of the "hoarding" items in stock, was surprised to find a bountiful supply of vitamin C, but $35.00 per bottle in a buy BOGO free offering. And I inquired about pneumonia shots only to learn that one has to be 65 or older to get one without a prescription, and at 62 they turned me away...
Went to a restaurant I've been going to for years, carry-out only which was not a problem, but they refused to allow me to use the restroom, citing state restrictions. I pointed out there would be less than 50 people in the restroom, but they remained unmoved.
Stopped by the bank to get $1,000.00 pocket money, just in case, and learned I was far from alone in that quest. And they had hand sanitizer...oh joy!!
Gasoline was down to $1.87/gallon for mid octane, so I topped off just to be prepared.
Now I can stay home in peace and not worry about the little things. Just gotta download those missing tax forms and hit Office depot to get them printed and it'll be smooth sailing.

Yep. I don't even try. And if I'm in bed what am I supposed to do, handcuff myself to the bedstead so I don't do it while I'm half-asleep?
I was never into the "handcuffs on the bed" thing to begin with.
Just go to a vet and get a 'cone of shame'! [:D]
Concerning the massive prayers for recovery at the Western Wall:
1, If one Dave Klepper had posted it, would someone, maybe even the moderator, considered it injecting religion into the discussion and removed it?
2. Be assured, that first of all I am a Doctor's son and retain huge respect for the medical profession. Our doctors currently tell us to stay away from crowds. Second, my Yeshiva's rabbis and teachers also believe in foillowing doctors' advice, and neither I nor any of my fellow students harkened the call of Tsvat's local rabbi. We don't need to gather in a huge crowd to pray for the cure or for the Chinese people. We do add the appropriate Psalms that speak of healing to our regular prayers.
Third, if the Chinese Ambassador saw fit to be present at that huge prayer gathering, perhaps this can result in ending persecution of Christians in China?
Now I am asking those of you who are Christians or anyone living outside Israel in a Democracy, especially if you are one of the lucky few who got to China in time to witness first-hand the World's last great steam locomotive main-line high-tonnage panorama and can reflect on your experiences, to:
Use this opportunity. Print out the news story and send it with your own personal letter to the Chinese Ambassadors to the USA or Canada or whatever, and their Ambassador to the UN. "Stop persecuting religious Chinese and maybe the prayers said in Jerusalem will do some good for you!"
Now why don't I write the letter? Religious Jews in China, today, are all foreigners. And are not persecuted. China wants good relations with both Israel and all the Arabs and Iran. Offically, the Chinese Government considers our Jewish religion as part of our Nationality and thus they have an excuse for not persecuting us in China. The Israeli government has enough to worry about concerning our developing trade and educatiional ties with China, and keeping this from in any way hurting USA interests, without my adding another issue. But you are free and clear to use this story.
And let us hope that someday they will stop persecuting Tibetans!

he number of Israelis infected by the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, rose Tuesday morning by six people to 304, according to the Health Ministry.
Among the infected are three people who work in the Central Laboratory for Detecting Coronavirus of the Ministry of Health at Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer. On Monday, the lab was shut down because its deputy director-general became infected. The new diagnoses include two additional staff members, Kan news reported.
There are four patients in critical condition, 11 in moderate and 284 that have mild cases of the virus, according to the ministry report.
So far, five Israelis have become infected with but recovered from COVID-19.
Some 223 people are hospitalized, 15 are in the check-in process and will be hospitalized by the end of the day, and 46 patients are being treated in home-isolation.
On Sunday night, a senior doctor at Ichilov Hospital was reported by Ynet to have contracted the virus. All of the patients in her unit – many of them senior citizens – had to be tested and transferred to another unit, and her staff was sent home to self-isolate. The next morning, an intern in the hospital’s urology department also tested positive for coronavirus.
In addition, the IDF confirmed that patient No. 273 is a 19-year-old soldier from the north of the country. She is in mild condition. The IDF Medical Corps. and the Ministry of Health are together conducting a comprehensive epidemiological investigation and will share that information soon.

Most of the accounts I've seen mention to not touch your face (after touching foreign surfaces) before washing your hands. So a bar of soap and a sink before bedtime can negate the need for handcuffs.
The photo has nothing to do with religion. I posted that photo of a huge crowd to show that some places are not taking the coronavirus very seriously.
The 'Sports' world has more brains and consideration than this one... imagine that.
All those people have to go home eventually and have contact with another hundred people who in turn... and so on.
Stupid is as stupid does but why put innocents in danger.

Worldwide as of 3/17:
Italy:27,980 confirmed cases 2,158 deaths, mortality rate is 7.7%. Italy has an older median age than the US, but ours is older than China's. So the next time someone says this is no worse than seasonal flu (0.1%), they are simply wrong. We don't really have enough information because of the failure to have testing kits and labs even now to know what our mortality rate will be, but likely 1-2%.
But, older adults have been hit the hardest in China. The death rate soars to 14.8% in those 80 and older; among those ages 70 to 79, the COVID-19 death rate in China seems to be about 8%; it’s 3.6% for those ages 60 to 69; 1.3% for 50 to 59; 0.4% for the age group 40 to 49; and just 0.2% for people ages 10 to 39. No deaths in children under 9 were reported.
NKP guy This might be a simple test for those who believe the public is "over-reacting": 1. Which airline or Amtrak tickets have you bought this week or are willing to commit to for next week? Round trip JAX to BNA and AUS. 2. Name the common stocks you bought this week or will commit to for next week. Plenty, now is the time to buy. Picked up some airline stock last week, have a couple other industries that I am looking to pick up this week. There are plenty of bargins out there if you look past the next couple of months. It is funny how people on this site blast wall street as being short sighted in their ownership goals, well put up or shut up. 3. Which hospital or nursing home have you visited this week or are willing to commit to visiting for next week? Most of those have restrictions now on who can show up. Since I don't know anyone close in either, I have no reason to go. 4. Which friends or family members are you concerned about as it pertains to COVID-19? The same ones that I am concerned for getting cancer, flu, broken bones, so and so forth. Answers: Don't assume about, or speak for other people.
