Well despite Davids good intentions he should not be dispensing medical advice based on his friend.

I would flip out too if I was Kalmbach. Can you imagine the lawsuits " I followed your advice as published and 3 family members died"!

You do know, don't you, that paper towels are not meant to be flushed down the toilet? That'll only cause plumbing problems for you

That's what the air compressor is for.   Surprise

I see the "lick the Coronavirus" thread got deleted.  What a shame.

Talk about an over-reaction.  Nothing surprises me anymore on here.

Well it was  getting political, but how could it not?  And I agree with the 'Dude, it's a shame it was dropped.

It'll probably happen to this one as well.  It has  veered a bit from the idea of my original post, but I'm not complaining.  I like a spirited discussion as long as everyone keeps it respectful.  There are no idiots here but there is quite a bit of wisdom.  Remember that.

Dave should re-post that advice in this thread, that is if it doesn't get deleted too.

Not trying to be a wise guy by any means, but...

1)  None, but I wasn't planning to anyway.  However my best friend was planning a visit by Amtrak this week and hasn't altered his plans.  He's traveling down from New Jersey.

2)  None, but I don't play the market anyway.  At any rate, it never seems to take much to upset Wall Street to begin with.  Why?  Well, get a pencil and paper and write these words down, words to remember and live by.  You ready?  OK..

     Money is a coward.

3)  None, but I don't know anyone who's hospitalized at this time nor anyone in a nursing home anyway.  Anyone I did know has passed away already.  And if I did know anyone it would take more than a flu bug to keep me away, count on it.

4)  None.  They're all in pretty good health, considering, and they know how to take care of themselves.  They're not the panicking kind either.

This might be a simple test for those who believe the public is "over-reacting":

1.  Which airline or Amtrak tickets have you bought this week or are willing to commit to for next week?

2.  Name the common stocks you bought this week or will commit to for next week.

3.  Which hospital or nursing home have you visited this week or are willing to commit to visiting for next week?

4.  Which friends or family members are you concerned about as it pertains to COVID-19?

Answers:  Obvious.

Noting that an over reaction can cost lives as well.

I remember the response from one medical researcher when he heard that the R0 (R-naught) for the virus was 3.8, saying that we were going to be facing a 1918 flu situation and the general reaction was that he was fear mongering by people all over the political spectrum.

Right.  And what has been or continues to be the motivation for people, including some on here,  to minimize the dangers of under-reaction or misdirected responses?

What are the costs of Over Reaction?

What are the costs of Under Reaction?

One results in monetary loss, the other is counted in lives.

Absolutely right.

I was more shocked to learn that not everybody has a band saw. What is this world coming to?

It's in pretty sad shape--I have a coping saw, a keyhole saw, a power saw, a hand saw, a table saw, a hack saw,--but no band saw or crosscut saw; worse yet, they all at my daughter's house, several miles from where I am.

Three Israelis have already recovered from the virus.

As the country went to bed on Wednesday, there were 97 people.
The following are the highlights of who these people are and how they contracted the virus:

Patients Nos. 84, 85 and 86 are in their 30s and 40s and recently returned to Israel from a trip to Germany. They arrived back in the country on March 12 and have been in isolation since then.

Patients Nos. 87 and 88 are children, a 10-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl. They are the offspring of patient No. 42. The boy had been with his father in Spain, returning to the country on February

Patients Nos. 89 and 90 are two women in their 60s and from central Israel. They recently traveled from Israel to Moscow and from Moscow to New York and back to Israel.

On Thursday morning, the director-general of the Health Ministry, Moshe Bar Siman Tov, told Army Radio that he expects that in the near future, dozens of Israelis will be diagnosed with the virus per day, if not more.

Over the last week, the Health Ministry has been rolling out new restrictions on Israelis to help stop the spread of the potentially lethal virus. On Wednesday evening, the ministry said that public gatherings could not longer have more than 100 people. In addition, the ministry advised that universities and other higher education institutions should prepare for distance learning ahead of their possible closure.

Bar Siman Tov advised that Israelis "change your lifestyle to deal with an external threat" and reminded them that it is the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions that are most at risk for becoming fatally ill from COVID-19.

Earlier in the week, the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that all people entering Israel from abroad would be required to adhere to 14 days of home-quarantine. Foreigners who cannot prove they have a place to stay will be refused entry.

In the past, Minister of Health Ya'acov Litzman has compared Israel to Switzerland, which has a similar population, to show how well the country is doing at curtailing the spread of the virus.

On Wednesday evening, the southern Swiss canton of Ticino declared a state of emergency over the coronavirus. According to local media, approximately 130 people jhave been confirmed carrying the virus in the canton, one person has died and 11 are in the intensive care unit.

As of March 11, there were 650 cases of coronavirus in Switzerland, more than 1,000 in the United States and around 130,000 worldwide.

AND there's the toilet paper shortages in some parts of the country. The last time TP flew off the shelves like this was in 1973 when Johnny Carson joked about a toilet paper shortage. A joke became transmogrified into a panic.

It got to be a running joke back then.  I think that after the oil shortage, marketing caught on to the fact that announced "shortages" could be put to good use in their sales campaigns.  And "since we sold the wheat to Russia" became the excuse for price hikes and panic-induced shortages of any food or or other supplies.

I was shocked as well to see that all their shelves of hand santizer were barren for the second week in a row, while their shelves of 91% isopropyl alcohol were completely untouched.

Take a look at the vitamin section at your drug store.  All the vitamin C has been gone for weeks.

According to USA Today, Amtrak says that its bookings are down 50 percent and cancellations are up 300 percent.  The company is looking at further train reductions, and non-critical mission employees would be asked to take unpaid time off on a voluntary basis.

Now there may be a silver lining in this cloud.  Clearly, Amtrak won't need as much toilet paper, so maybe it can send the surplus to Walmart, Target, etc.  Or better yet, how about auctioning it off to the Trains Forum participants?

FWIW, I was shopping in a regional equivalent to Walmart this evening, and the shelves they normally stock with toilet paper were full of rolls of hand towels.

I was shocked as well to see that all their shelves of hand santizer were barren for the second week in a row, while their shelves of 91% isopropyl alcohol were completely untouched.

Desperate times...etc.

Yeah, I'm a cynic, especially as far as professional sports are concerned.

I don't blame you, I still believe the fix was in on the superbowl immediately after 911.

Not a bit, never cared for the sport personally . I Just thought their decision was noteworthy in contrast to all the claims  of "viva chicken little"

The NBA's willing to take a hit in the cash box over this?  Commendable, but let's see for just how long.  We're talking BIG money here.  Yeah, I'm a cynic, especially as far as professional sports are concerned.

In most instances diarrhea is not one of the outcomes.  But people that come down with coronavirus will be quarantined for 14 days.  So, people are laying in a supply just in case.

Oh, there is one other factor.  Anyone that assumes human beings are rationale is sadly mistaken.  This is another example of a knee jerk (irrationale) response to a real problem, but one the media has hyped out of proportion.
