I think the Robinson family eventually sold it, and I don't think it has any Louisiana connections anymore.  I can't remember.

I think it's a national brand, now, but as long as the formula stays right and they keep the caffeine in it, I'll be drinking it because it's GOOD.

Drink Barqs    It's Good

A great New Orleans and Biloxi tradition.  I think the Robinson family eventually sold it, and I don't think it has any Louisiana connections anymore.  I can't remember.

Incidentally, I had completely forgotten about many of the beverages that were mentioned. I can add some--RC Cola (and moon pies) and Nehi beverages, along with Cheerwine and Orange Crush.

To change the subject from beverages to slogans, I want to mention my all-time favorite slogan.   It's brief, no nonsense, right to the point:

   Drink Barqs

   It's Good

Adding a good amount of Canadian Club will enable the Vernor's to open one's mind as well as one's sinuses!  At least it does for me!

My favorite soft drink:  Vernor's Ginger Ale  ("It's aged in wood.")

It can open your sinuses sometimes.

I enjoy taking visitors to the "World of Coke" in Atlanta and watching their faces at the end when they try some of the more interesting international flavors.

Just did that yesterday!  First time since they moved the place.  The tasting is still the best part.

The rest of it leads me to believe that Amtrak would be fabulous, on time and wonderful if Anderson would just drink a Coke a day.

You'd think he would have gotten in the habit at Delta.

Yes, if Amtrak discarded the Pepsi Products and provided Coca-Cola products, maybe more people would ride?

In the seven years I lived in Atlanta,  I became quite fond of RC and moon pies,  even though Coke owned the town.

Perhaps the discussion of various beverages is suggesting to Amtrak that the offferings on board should be enlarged? Would that not be on track?

Hearing the name Mogen David brings back a lot of memories of holidays with the family, we always drank it, locally made in St. L, they had a  big winery that friends and I toured one time.  Long gone now, used to see MD 20/20 bottles in the curb when I went to work in downtown years ago.  MO has a lot of wineries now, when they were just starting out, we would visit them and wine was cheap and free samples too.  Owner of one asked a friend what type of wine she liked and I remember her saying Boone's Farm. He looked at her kinda funny and the rest of us just wanted to curl up in a corner and pretend we did not know her. But at least she was honest.   I rode on CZ abd SW Chief this summer and they still had the real diner but CONO has not, did not like the deli sandwich they had, only the salami was good, so I'd take the other meats off and eat it. Breakfast  was good and microwaved pasta ok too. I'll be ok with the meals but will miss sitting in a diner and having great conversations with folks. Even when I traveled with parents, we'd get a single traveler with us and always had a good experience.

Along with most other threads that are up for more than two or three hours.  It does not bother me.  When it has gone too far off topic or dragged on too long, I stop reading.

Is that a problem for you?  There just could be a connection to preferences in beverage choices and the new Amtrak menu.

Meanwhile, THE most satisfying single bottle of soft drink I ever had was an Afri-Cola longneck, up at the top of a climb in Riezlern in the mid-Seventies. The brand apparently had a NewCoke-like fiasco in the late Nineties, got back to what was supposed to be original in 2006 ... and is supposed to be available in the New York area now!  250mg/l caffeine and malic acid like SweeTarts ... it's gotta be great!

Also in Ann Arbor.Image result for Afri-Cola l"

Has anyone else on the Forum had experience with the South African drink Appletizer?

No, but there's a variety of 'carbonated cider' products available here (including some packaged as imitating 'champagne' or other sparkling wine) and those are, indeed, very good.  I don't usually drink them because they have a large amount of sugar, and when that sugar is fructose in apple juice I don't react very well to it.  But that has little to do with their taste...

Has anyone else on the Forum had experience with the South African drink Appletizer?  Basically carbonated apple-juice, not alcoholic, natural except for carbonation and no sugar added, and very good in my opinion.

They are experimenting with Orange flavored Coke in some areas of Dallas

I've had it, and it's a mistake. I think they were trying for that Droste chocolate orange vibe... but it did not translate.  Those of you that want a sample can approximate it at any of the fast-food restaurants that have those computerized Coke machines with screens to select thousands of flavor options.

I was tremendously excited when I saw we'd get orangeade-flavored ginger ale (it's a parallel to the ginger-ale-and-lemonade mixes that were already being produced, probably to capitalize on the iced-tea-and-lemonade mix craze) but only a couple of bottles' worth made that 'not so good' either.  Perhaps there has been some innovation in producing 'orange-color flavoring' like that for d-limonene extraction a couple of years ago that spurred all the "natural orange cleaning-power" products.  Industrial flavoring advances are commendable, but they don't necessarily imply 'drinkable'.

I hadn't realized just how good Orange Crush was until I visited my son's college and had a glass 'on tap'.  Up until then I was a Sunkist customer... largely for the 'added ingredient', just as with Barq's root beer.

Veeeeery different from the taste of the stuff talked about here:

Meanwhile, I find the interesting capitalist experiment that is Premium (Premium-Cola, that is).  Has anyone tasted this?  (It had my beloved malic acid but now has changed to phosphoric like Coke).

They are experimenting with Orange flavored Coke in some areas of Dallas and like the Sprecher Orange Soda (Milwaukee Made...sold in Texas to HEB as well as Jakes Frozen Custard), it tastes like cough syrup with carbonated water.  So far only Orange Crush has hit the true orange soda flavor.

And then there is -

What happened to Bartles and Jaymes wine coolers?

Zima killed the wine cooler

Actually…it was taxation. In January 1991, Congress quintupled the excise tax on wine from $.17/gallon to $1.07/gallon. ... Zima and Smirnoff Ice reigned supreme, and major wine cooler producers like Boones Farm and Bartles & Jaymes switched to malt beverage recipes.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!
