2013-14 winter loco failures
Posted by blue streak 1 on Friday, January 10, 2014 8:09 PM

Some early fall posts mentioned possibility of Amtrak locos failure rate being high this winter causing many delays and cancellations.   Well it appears to be so with many LD trains having freight locos leading and a few trains with HEP failures.  There has been many CHI trains cancelled this past week with indication though no confirmation that equipment shortages have caused the cancellations. Locos how many ?

There is major concern here that the DC traction motors are being ground faulted out now with this early storm late this past December.  No one can determine what the rest of this winter will be but certainly plans need to be in place in case there is a lot more snow ?

Does anyone know how many locos failed during this past storm ?  Read on another forum that there were over 70 locos down at one time in CHI.  Any way to confirm ?

You Posters can keep us updated as to # failures since Jan 22.

Anyone know if Amtrak is running 2 units on each of its Regional trains ?  A reduced schedule but slightly longer trains might be prudent  both NEC and other trains ?
