<P mce_keep="true">Had the writer for the Charlotte Observer been imbued by a sense of full disclosure, he would have noted that a passenger on the Piedmont from Charlotte to Raleigh gets a subsidy of $29.24 before interest and depreciation. That's $4.24 more than the regular fare of $25. He mentioned that the service is subsidized, but he did not disclose that the subsidy is more than the fare.</P> <P>Moderate speed rail is a viable solution for transport problems in relatively short, high density corridors, as many writers have noted. Unfortunately, in most instances, they tout the advantages whilst overlooking the costs. </P>
