<p>In nominal terms the price of gasoline in the United States may have increased many times over. But when adjusted for inflation, the price rise has not been nearly so dramatic. </p><p>In 1981 the average inflation adjusted price of a gallon of regular gasoline was approximately $3.20. Today, a gallon of regular gasoline in the U.S., according to the Energy Information Administration, costs an average of $4.095 per gallon. Thus, gasoline would have to increase to $6.40 in order to double the 1981 price, which was the previous inflation adjusted high.</p>
