Mr. Milenkovic's analysis of Amtrak's ticket pricing and comparable transport costs is maybe the best analysis that I have read on this site.He rightly points out, amongst other things, that most American's don't know how much it costs them to own and operate a personal vehicle, i.e. car, truck, motorcycle, etc.  When I was working as an accountant and financial planner - I am retired, I told several of my colleagues, who lived in the country and drove more than 60 miles a day to and from work, how much it was costing them.  They were shocked.  And they were at least associate accountants.  Unfortunately, they did not have an alternative mode of transport.
