<p>We've beat this point to death, but I think a comment about money is appropriate. Lots of people glaze over when the issue of money is thrown on the table, but it is an ugly fact of economic life. </p><p>As Senator Dirksen put it, "A billion here and a billion there, and soon you're talking about real money." The more than $1.3 billion proposed for Amtrak is not the swing issue associated with deficit spending in the U.S., but it is part of a problem that has led to a large debt burden for this country. At best the debt has to serviced, which means taxes will be used to pay the interest on it. The taxes come from you and me.</p><p>If a person is over weight, he or she is not likely to lose it by increasing his caloric intake or reducing her exercise routine. Cuts need to be made all around. Discontinuing the funding of long distance trains, which have a low social value, would be a good place to start trimming our national debt binge. </p>
