From Egged itself:

"Green" transportation in Jerusalem
Updated Date  9.20.9/18
First ten electrical buses enter their service in Jerusalem
Ten new electrical buses were introduced to the public on the official opening ceremony, that was held on 3.9.19 in Jerusalem by ministry of ecology and municipality of Jerusalem in cooperation with Egged. Starting from 4.9.19 these buses will operate on route number 15, leading from central bus station to Telpiot neighborhood. This project was funded by ministry of ecology with estimated budget of 4 million NIS.

These ten electrical buses are just a beginning of a huge process of replacing the conventional public transportation means with more environment-friendly "green" ones. These new vehicles are designed to provide passengers with better service while reducing the environmental pollution to almost zero level.

These first ten electrical buses are only the beginning
Electrical buses conquer the world
In the recent years electrical buses turned out to be a real alternative to a conventional buses all over the world. Their main advantages are: lower cost, almost zero pollution and noise. During 2018 year alone the total world fleet of electrical buses has grown by 32%, while 95% of the total fleet are produced and utilized in China, where this bunch is considered to be in high priority.

Facts and numbers:
In Jerusalem we are utilizing electrical buses of K9C model, produced by Chinese supplier BYD.  Operational range of these vehicles between the recharges is 200 km, while maximum speed is 70 km/h, which is more then enough for city routes. In the future, however, their range will be significantly increased, and they will be used on intercity routes as well. Also, designated parking was erected in Jerusalem for these buses, where they can recharge their batteries.

Battery buses and trolley buses eliminate emissions from the tailpipe.  What do they do about the emissions from the smokestack of the power plant??

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

Battery buses and trolley buses eliminate emissions from the tailpipe.  What do they do about the emissions from the smokestack of the power plant??

The powerplant uses an optimized Rankine cycle with efficiency substantially above that of a typical bus engine, and it runs 'steady state' rather than repeated acceleration, deceleration, and idling.  The electric power is also massively useful for purposes other than bus transportation.

I also can't stand the smoke and ambient heat from diesel buses.  When I was a very small child in Manhattan, in the age before even the GM fishbowls became common, and before I 'knew better', I loved the smell of 'old green bus' exhaust.  I'm sure that stuff was rich in some terribly carcinogenic substance or other.   The nanoparticulates in contemporary diesels are far more dangerous... and go right through any current, or practical, 'diesel particulate filter'... and there is no pleasure at all in having to tolerate them.

The current 'consternation' is about redefining CO2 as a 'polluting emission' (I think we now have 'carbon' emissions for the same reason we have 'sodium' in nutrition listings -- the amount by weight is lower than the emission of 'carbon dioxide' (over three times the mass of its carbon!) and sodium chloride respectively... plus it's so much scarier-looking to quote element names.

For use in cities with smog or other pollution, redistributing the emission plume away from population areas is probably a significant benefit.  Smoke opacity has not been a concern in coal-fired powerplants in many years, and much of the "NOx" business I consider a scientific scam with the great reduction in reactive hydrocarbon emissions that were the 'feedstock' of photochemical smog.

Feel the electricity in the air

Updated on 22./2.04/0

We are happy to inform you that we have equipped ourselves with 200 new electric buses, which will soon enter service, and we have completed another step on the way to making all our city buses pollution-free! We will continue to work to guarantee you higher quality, quieter and cleaner public transportation.

Egged announces the results of the largest electric bus selection process in Israel's history: the Shlomo Group, Pandan and Auto Chen are the companies chosen to supply Egged with 200 electric buses. After a six-month trial and competition process, these are the three companies that will supply the new buses to Israel's largest fleet of electric buses :
The new buses are expected to hit Israel's roads in April 2022 and they will be added to Egged's bus fleet, which currently includes 35 electric buses manufactured by BYD and Golden Dragon, which will make Egged's fleet of electric buses (235 buses) the largest in Israel, by a huge margin from the competitors, and one of the fleets The largest electric trains in Europe.

The geographical distribution of the vehicles is expected to be as follows: 150 buses will operate in the Haifa area and will be concentrated in 2 Egged parking lots where new charging stations will be installed. The additional 50 buses will operate in the Rashalat area and will be concentrated in a new parking lot established by Ayalon Routes in the west of Rashalat.

The cost of the transaction is estimated at hundreds of millions of shekels, with the entire project being carried out with the support of the Public Transportation Authority, which is a partner in the current procurement of the 200 electric buses and in the long-term plan of turning Egged's municipal fleet into a fleet in which only zero-emission buses will operate in the near future. At the same time as the bus procurement plans, Egged and the Transportation Authority are working together to locate and establish infrastructure for charging the buses. Egged receives direct financial support for 50 of the 200 electric buses from the Ministry of Environmental Protection following a win in the call for support for electric buses published by the Ministry during 2020.

Bagged points out that the introduction of the 200 electric buses is added to the massive purchase of new buses and is a significant leap forward in moving to an advanced, quieter and cleaner fleet of buses that will serve the traveling public every day. In addition to this, the transition to electric city buses will help in making the cities in Israel significantly quieter, pleasant and cleaner. The new electric buses will even be equipped with batteries with a general capacity of about 420 kWh, a figure that is a significant leap forward compared to the buses that currently exist in Egged's fleet, which will allow for greater operational flexibility due to the increase in the daily travel range.

Nir Landau, Egged's purchasing division manager:"This is an important day for the people of Israel, for the Egged company, and of course for public transportation passengers who will now be able to enjoy higher quality, quieter, and cleaner public transportation. The selection procedure was carried out after a unique experiment in which 5 different models of electric buses were tested for half a year. After a thorough and careful examination We chose the 3 models that were chosen, with the understanding that these are the models that will give the residents of Israel and the traveling public the best driving experience alongside other elements such as safety, wear and tear, cost and more."

Egged Europe won the tender to operate electric public transport in the Netherlands

Updated on 22./2.07/0

The public transport authority of the Amsterdam region announced the winning of the Dutch subsidiary of Egged (EBS) in the tender to operate about 220 electric buses for a period of 15 years and with a total revenue of about NIS 4.2 billion.

Starting in December 2023, EBS will operate the new franchise and provide public transport services in the Waterland and Zaanstreek areas north of the city of Amsterdam. Egged Europe's winning proposal will improve the quality of public transportation in these areas through improved and efficient traffic maps proposed by the company, which will reduce travel times within the concession areas, and from these areas to the employment, shopping and entertainment areas in Amsterdam. The proposal includes a wide network of night lines. Special emphasis It can be adapted to the needs of tourists departing from Amsterdam to tourist attractions located in the concession areas, such as the cities of Volendam and Edam, the island of Marken and the open-air museum in Zaanse Schans.

The operation of the new concession will be carried out from December 2023 using only electric buses and is in line with the ambitious electrification goals of the Dutch authorities. The operation of public transport in the areas of the new concession has been carried out for the last 10 years using diesel-powered buses by the EBS company (in the Waterland region) and the French company Transdev (in the Zaanstreek region).

This win by Egged is added to its win two months ago in a tender to operate public transportation in the IJsell-Vecht area in the North of the Netherlands using more than 300 electric buses, starting in December of this year. The operating period is 13 years and the total amount of revenue from this tender is approximately NIS 3.8 billion.

These two new franchises will be operated in addition to two other franchises operated by EBS since 2019 (the Voorne Putten franchise near Rotterdam and the Haaglanden franchise in the area surrounding the city of The Hague). Following the new wins, Egged Europe's activity in the Netherlands will be doubled to more than 700 buses, of which more than 500 are electric buses.

In addition to operations in the Netherlands, Egged Europe operates in Poland through its subsidiary Mobilis, which operates a fleet of approximately 300 buses in the major cities of Warsaw, Wroclaw and Krakow. Starting at the end of this year, Mobilis will also operate in the city of Bydgosh, where the company won a tender to operate 50 buses for a period of 9 years, starting in January 2023.

Avi Friedman CEO of Egged: "Winning the two new tenders makes Egged a leading and growing operator in the Dutch market. The huge fleet of electric buses that will be operated under these new franchises positions the Egged Group as a leader in the transition to electric buses in Europe and Israel. Egged Europe is a significant growth engine for the Egged Group."

Efi Arbel CEO of Egged Europe: "We won two of the largest and most significant public transport tenders in the Netherlands. Egged's operations in the Netherlands receive extremely high user satisfaction scores every year. The advanced traffic maps we offered in these tenders and the focus The travel experience, together with the satisfaction of the users and the authorities with the current activity, were significant factors that led to the ranking of our offers as the highest quality and to winning the tenders. Our goal is to continue and expand the activities of Egged Europe in the Netherlands, Poland and other countries."
