MNRR construction of Walk Bridge
Posted by blue streak 1 on Friday, February 24, 2017 8:51 PM

Starting thread to follow the construction of the replacement Walk Bridges.  Apparently for duplication sakes will be 2 separate  2 track lift bridges replacing the single 4 track swing bridge.

CT DOT is starting preliminary surveying for approaches of the bridge.

Two parallel vertical lift bridges make a certain amount of sense.  It lessens the weight (and corresponding inertia) of the bridge structure that has to be moved when it is raised or lowered.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

First construction work starts with a fence being built and the start of building material and equipment being staged.

1st part of pre construction  - for the bridge is starting next week.  The Danbury branch dockyard storage yard is being expanded to handle more commuter cars that then will not have to cross the temporary 2 track Walk bridge(s).  Last week all CAT was removed.  Next week Dock yard tracks are being removed to relocate tracks for more storage capacity.  As well new CAT poles relocated for the relocated tracks are being installed.

Why is it this project is moving along compared to the Gateway tunnel bores ?

The Walk swing bridge was having opreational failures.  I guess they are going to wait until the tunnels start to spring leaks.
