One word. Quanity

1800 on BNSF, 1200 on NS. We like variety, which with those numbers can be difficult to find.

So the C40-9W has kind of become the 21st Century version of the SD40-2. Remember how everyone used to bemoan the quantity of 40-2s out there?

I pass Landers twice a day on my ride to and from work and the majority of the power that I see there is C40-9W/ES40DC's.  Various SD70 models also turn up, plus occasional foreign power.  I like them, but their sheer numbers tend to lessen any variety.  By the way, NS is the only owner of C40-9/C40-9W's.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

Atmo check out http://www.thedieselshop.us/CSX.HTML and note that the first three CSX C44s are classed as Dash 8s and the remaining 50 are pure Dash 9s. CSX #9000-9002 were transitional models from the Dash 8 to Dash 9 Series of locomotives.

The NS SD70M-2s are a refreshing sight on the ex-NYC Chicago line. If you lived here, you would hate the C40-9W's too! Man...they're all you see on this line! The mid to late '90s had to be the best years for locomotive spotting around here. Conrail had a nice variety of there own locos along with tons of foreign run through power. You never knew what you'd see. Then NS took over with their 9W's and that was that. Things are starting to get more interesting now though.

nice to see people agree with me. those poor BN SD60Ms. they looked AWESOME with the cablights. then ATSF shows up and starts dropping them and makes them instantly ugly. horrible

i know, man. and let's not forget how rivers are bad cuz the CSX SD70MACs like to jump off of the tracks and coast down the hill to get a drink at random, it's a cumberland tradition to back 2 units into the turntable pit every year, crashes are frequent with CSX RCOs, and several other CSX locomotives are allergic to railroad tracks

Do not tell that to the Brazillans then since they have over 500 dash-7 and even older ones plus some uboats still running around.  Also the Illinois Railnet just Scrapped out their EMD and is keeping their GE's instead something to do with fuel economy and parts supply is EASIER TO GET.

I have a hard time believing that it's easier to get parts for any pre-dash8 GE compared to 645 EMD.

Having said that, I have no problems with Super7s and older. It's the ubiqutous nature of of the 8's and 9s that's irritating.

Also, the GE wide cab is ugly.

Now the newer GE spartan cabs are kinda nice.

I like them better than the gp60s, but I think that my favorite loco may be the ac6000. Long live u23b's, Dash 9's, AC6000s, SD-70 MAC's, and SD-40s!

Those horns are S3L's.The ex Con C40-8W smoke more than anything I have seen before. They come handy when a ex Con is still in CR paint a different color from YN2-3 or WF/HH paint/NS paint. Haven't seen that much CN but they can come handy on CN. The only Dash 8's I like are the Warbonnets. I don't see much of them in the east but when they come around it is a sight to see with the red, yellow, and silver paint and ditchlights near the coupler.

I personally like the C40-8s more than their widecab brother. And, anyone that says they like the C40-8Ws hasnt ever ridden one. BIGGEST piles of junk on the planet. Ask any engineer, the UP ones suck, the CSX ones suck, and the NS ones suck. BNSF has tried to keep theres in OK condition, but from the outside, the pink and peeling warbonnets are the ugliest things, and those ones still suck. Dash 8s suck in general, but the standard cab looks nice.

Preach it brother! That's all I see around here from NS on everything....for goodness sakes!!! Everything! Intermodal, manifest, auto, steel, you name it. It does get boring real fast. However I do like SD40-2's. So sad to see them exit stage leftDisapprove [V].

"Who thinks all Dash-9's are the most boring locomotives of the last 170 years!"

that would be me!

a dash-9 by itself is fine, its an impressive piece of machinery..its just that EVERY locomotive I see these days seems to be a dash-9..boring boring boring.. (I live near CSX and NS mainlines)

I started railfanning as a teenager in the 80's..Conrail SD40-2's GP30's GP8's and GP10's, old U-boats..then the new SD50's and C39-8's..not to mention D&H and Susquehanna Alcos, and everything under the sun on Guilford...now its nothing but wide-cabs everywhere..

well, im sure there were guys in the 1950's who were saying "man..trains are so boring these days! nothing but F-units and Alco PAs everywhere!" ;)

things change..in 30 years dash-9's will be the rare relics we are out chasing before they disappear..but for me, right now, local class1's are exceddingly dull..

thank God for shortlines! Big Smile [:D]
