I read something about that the licensed F40s that MPI /MK Rail manufactured with seperate HEP Generators were rebuilt from older locomotives. I am curious of what the original  donor locomotives were. I believe  this was a large enough of a rebuild for them to be designated as new locomotives. I am mainly interested in the origin of the Coaster and MBTA F40PH-Cs. But  I will be grateful for any info.

IIRC the F40PH-2C were all newly built. About 30 were built by EMD, the rest in licence by Morrison Knudsen (now MPI). I think 26 MBTA locomotives came from EMD and 12 from MK. The Coaster locomotives were built by MK.

I think only the Tri-Rail MK F40PHL-2 were rebuilt from GP40.

The F40PH-2C were built new on new underframes with new body shells. Some rebuilt components, such as alternators and traction motors were used.
 
The Tri-Rail F40PHL-2, on the other hand started with existing GP40 frames and were fitted with noses and carbodies removed from F45 locomotives being "parted out" at Boise. So the F40PH-2C units were new, just like those from EMD for MBTA, but the Tri-Rail units were almost completely built from parts removed fom existing EMD locomotives.
 
MK and MPI built a number of commuter locomotives based on GP40 underframes for MARC and VRE and recently for Sun Rail based on GP49s, but these were all hood units. There were also units for NJT which were GP40s that retained their hood unit cabs but used F45 cowls (or new cowls when the F45 spares ran out).
 
But all of these were easily recognised from the F40PH design.
