Norfolk Southern Dash 9s
Posted by magicman710 on Wednesday, July 18, 2007 4:46 PM

Ok, I know alot about trains, but I thought Dash 9s have the headlights on the nose, and a desktop control stand. I have seen alot of videos and photos, and the Dash 9s there have headlight above the windows, and a old fashioned control stand. Are they a different type of dash 9?

I don't think NS had desktop controls on any of their own orders - I could be wrong.  I do know their SD70s and most of their GEs through the 90s continued to use the AAR control stand.  Nowadays, that's the way most locomotives are built - desktop controls are now considered passe' for freight use.  As for the headlights and number boards - placement of those was an option for the railroads to consider.  Most railroads chose to put the headlights on the nose, but some opted for the headlights overhead.

Actually, new GEVOs have the standard control stand.

Actually, I think that's what I said.  :)  The 'standard' control stand is referred to as the AAR control stand.

Ok, I know alot about trains,

We have a saying on the RR, "That's what you get for thinking".

Actually, I wish NS would mount the headlights on the nose. With the headlights on the nose there is much less glare because when they are mounted up high, there is a reflection off of the top of the short hood.

I also wish that the ditch lights could be separately turned on as they are with many of the units from Conrail. When the headlights are on bright running thru fog or snow at night, it is murder on the eyes. Being able to dim the headlights and have the ditch lights on is a BIG help.

As for those desk top controls (that NS inherited), you can take and stick em where the sun never shines!
